amp head question
« on: March 27, 2006, 01:34:51 AM »
I have a cabinet with six 10 inch speakers and I am currently playing through a peavey XR-400. This is not an actual bass amp head. I guess it's just a PA head. So, how much of a better sound, if any, would I get if I got an actual bass amp head? What's the difference and if its a real big difference, whats the cheapest I can find that doesnt compromise quality? I saw one at a music store the other day and it was 1,000 bucks! is that the average price for a good one?

WELL TRY PURCHASING A EQ EFFECTS PEDAL OR A PREAMP AND THEN PLUG THE OUTPUT OF THE PREAMP INTO THE INPUT OF THE XR-400 IT SHOULD BE WAY CHEAPER AND HAVE A QUITE REASONABLE SOUND.

I agree with Catron.  You can find a rackmount type preamp like a BBE or you can find a floor mount preamp like a Sansamp for $100 - 150.

Even if you do decide to buy a bass head, you can get a lot for under $1,000.  A brand new Gallien- Krueger 1001-RB II is a REALLY nice amp.  You can buy one brand new for about $800.  You can even get an SWR Super Redhead (300w SWR amp / 2X10 speaker combo unit) used for about $850.

There's a lot of good used Hartke heads going around $300 - 500.

Happy hunting!

Peace,

James
