Who on this board plays mostly quartet music?
« on: April 06, 2006, 12:35:51 AM »
Dudes,

I'm curious to know who plays mostly quartet music and who plays mostly praise and worship music. I play both. At my church, when the mass, women, or yound adults sing its mostly praise and worship....but when the men sing..its mostly quartet.

I know some of you don't play quartet...but I'm from North Carolina and grew up on it watching and listening to my uncles play that style of gosple music. They were great guitar players who never took a lesson but somehow had the skills to "wow" people who listen to them.

I think there's much to learn from quartet guitar players because they can take simple things like the pentatonic scale and create some of the most masterful riffs and solos. I think that is the key with those guys... they can learn a simple skill and apply it in many ways in contrast to some people who are too concern with learning many skills and techniques without maximizing that skill into their playing.

I absolutely love quartet music. Ol' School :Mighty Clouds of Joy, Cantons, Troy Ramey, Robert Blair, Doc Mckenzie,Lee Williams, Slim,Willie Banks, Gospel Keynotes, Tommy Ellison, Keith WonderBoy, Williams Brothers, Jackson Southernaires, and the list goes on. Much luv to new school groups like: The Soul Seekers, Christianaires, Tru Believers, & Damon Little and Nu Beggining. Quartet is different from any other style. For me quartet is definitely # 1.  The licks, riffs, and power chords these guys use will send chills up your spine. I attended a Byron Cage concert here in SC and there were several openings acts. The second group was a local quartet and they literally set the building on fire! A contemporary group followed and opened by saying that it is hard performing after quartets, and he was right. God Bless....

GuitarGrover what part of NC you in?
Hey GoatRdr couldnt say it any better. I live, drink, eat, and breath Quartet. I play it all at my church; praise and whorship, choir, hyms and quartet. But I just get that nice tingle when I start running them riff and quartet turns.I think its the way that bass player and drummer hold that pocket with that straight tight drive. That allow the keys and of course me on that lead guitar to really put down some nice fills and riffs. GEEEE .... SAS !!

I love quartet music, grew up on it.  I live in NYC and have played for many a groups,
quartet, contemporary you name it.

But nothing hits home like a good old quartet chuck number "as we call it".

I have for years played mostly quartet, but found I was doing my self an injustice.
learn all different styles of music it makes you more versatile and most of all more
marketable.

I have for the pass 5 years of so, have incorporated Jazz, country, r&B, latin and Bassa
into my playing.  Believe me when I say its makes a difference.

God Bless,

Hi Dudes,

I'm from Kinston North Carolina...but I have lived in Atlanta since 1983.  I was listening to some quartet music today and discovered a nice little lick that the guitar player do in "I'm still here"....Now I've played that son quite a few times but today I really listen to the lick and copied it then realized how he was doing it....like I said it is amazing how those guys can take a simple skill and create such masterful licks.....if I was good at video like Uriah...I would post it on the board. I have all of the equipment to do it but just have to learn how.

When I first started playing the drums at my church i played for the male corus.  All those old guys sung was Quartet!!!  I HATED it because I couldn't throw a lick in or do the stuff that i had been shedding on in my basement.  I count that as a BLESSING because if it had not been for playing that drive i don't know what type of player i'd be.  I really like quartet music now.  The Canton Spirituals, Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson, and The Mighty Clouds of Joy are amoung my favorites.

If you ever want to learn how to play a drive and lay in a groove learn to CORRECTLY play quartet music.  Its so simple, but because of that its hard to play.  Technically, there is not much to it, but because of that the feel of the music matters so much more.

You Are Your Only Limitation!!
