Exhortation Can U please Help
« on: March 15, 2006, 09:26:54 PM »
Hello,

My name is Brian, and I was recently ordained Minister of Music at my church I just recently started getting into praising and worshiping, but I know if you exhort the people to praise at the beginning then you wont have to try so hard to get them into the spirit. I basically need advice on what to( as far as starting praise service) " It's time for praise and worship, come on and bless the Lord" etc. etc. and I really need advice on what to say while worshipping. If anyone has any advice please feel free to let me know.P.S. I am only 14

Bless you for taking on such a task at such a young age. i was fourteen when i became minister of music as well!
Before i could effectively invoke God's presence within p&w I had to make Praise and Worship be apart of my daily life. David said Psalms34 i will bless the lord at ALL TIMES..... not just during praise and worship service. So before you can be used to minster thru praise and worship. it has to be in your heart.

Upon entering service, pray for God to lift the burdens of the people and pray also for a spirit of Praise and Worship to be in the atmosphere. Ask God to give you a heart for Praise and Worship and the words you need to say will flow from your spirit. They may be there but you have to tap into it. Make yourself available for God to use you and it will not be you but God's Spirit in you.

Whatever you do, dont browbeat the people to praise and worship. If they dont receive you, go on anyway and allow God to be in control. It can be frustrating at times beleive me but if you keep a costant and sincere prayer life about it God will began to change the hearts of the people and they will began to understand praise and worship.

When you are opening up, its always good to do something like " look at ya neighbor and say...." or say, " how many woke up breathing this morning? Well the bible says, Let evrything that hath Breath Praise the lord!!!"
When Worshipping its more of an intimate moment. Let them know that this time is between you and God. Concentration on God is important in this part of service because he may enter in  a way that will blow your mind. Its been times where when it was time for worship and God was using me to speak and the praise team didnt get a chance to sing because we entered into his presence and yokes were destroyed and it was awesome.

All i can say is make yourself available to be used and God will step in and take control! i will be praying for you!

Something my pastor told me that's really stuck: the focus is upward. Exhortation is mostly an example to the people of HOW to worship, and a showing that the leader is welcoming them to join him/her in the worship experience.

I agree with the browbeating comment--if you're not getting response, continue to worship God by yourself (or with the praise team). In essence, "Let your light shine before all men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father..."

Indeed, God is doing a new thing!  Praize God for you young man

I've done the P&W thing for, well just let's say A WHILE.

I've been in ministries where all they did was, as somewhat put it "brow beat" the congregation to enter in

....... Don't you know how good God been to you? ......You otta be happy to be in the Land of living..... a lot of people didn't wake up..... If you got the activity of your limbs you need to be givin' God some praise.... and so on >:(

But what I've found, and I've actually built a philosophy around is, that As I fervently worship God, God will minister to His people.

Personally, when I worship the Lord I'm not looking around to see who ain't.... or isn't (sorry) ::)

Your job is not to get them in the Spirit!  I think that's where we miss it a lot of times.

It's a vertical outreach to God, not a horizontal outreach to man, if it were you'd be eliminating the key element of P&W.

If you usher in the presence of God with Your Worship and your team, choir etc. do the same on an individual basis; collectively and corporately, the anointing wil flow,  God will show up,  take a front row seat and supply the need of the house!

I've seen it happen on a number of occasions where the minister, (if he's wise) can't or won't preach and just allow the Spirit of God resonate and deliver the people!

Sometimes we'd go straight into an altar call;

 No announcements,

    No offering (well later)

          No testim...  never mind 8)

Anyway,  just allow the Holy Spirit to direct you!

He'll get the Glory .... the people will get the Victory!

Go forth in Jesus' Name young man! :)

Please read these words and then pray about what I am about to say:

The minute you become concerned about the people, you put yourself in a loosing battle. I am a worship leader and right now I am in the midst of a storm it is good but a storm nonetheless. I use to spend so much time trying to find ways to reach and engage the people in worship. I have read all the books watched all the videos and you know what, none of it really works. The reason is simple; the move of God can not be orchestrated or manufactured by doing a set of predetermined actions. Because you are new to this place: this is an awesome time for you right now, you need to spend time alone just you and God. Get away from all the noise. Don’t listen to the latest songs and music. Just you and the father. Find a secret place and rest in it fro awhile. It is in that place that God will show you what is good for the house. What works for me may not work for you.

Before you get trained and mentored by well meaning people, Let God shape your worship. Cultivate a dependence on the Holy Spirit to guide you. Do not be afraid to fail as you learn. Leading Worship in a mass setting is a faith thing more than an ability thing. I spent a lot of time working within my ability and although God has given me tremendous gifting my trust is always in him (or I'm learning to be that way). The day I stopped thinking about what the people like, what gets them excited and simple sought God for what He wanted that day, worship began to become really simple.

Many times we think about the song, the sound and the people. How often do we say “Lord what do you want me to do today, what do you want to hear, what will bring a smile to your face". Then wait until he answers. Be willing to wait, it may be uncomfortable but wait anyway. And when he speaks, do what he says. If you do that the people will be forced into a place of true worship because the presence of the Lord will really be there. As much as this may sound novel it is the truth that many worship leaders fail to adhere to.

When I come into the House of God, I come to feel his Glory. It's not about a move. A move keeps moving. I'm seeking The Glory of God to rest in the house. You have to tarry for that manifestation. If you get there to that place, the people will follow. They will not have a choice.

Now Exhortation is simple:

Know what you are after that day; search the scripture for verses that support the focus for the worship. You can’t be all over the place when dealing with 300 plus folks. Give them 1 or 2 clear mindset's to focus on. If its God Love then everything stated or sang must be about His Love or God's Grace etc... Quote scripture that is the most powerful thing because the word once it goes out can not return void. I can tell you more as I go and I learn as well.

PM me and we can exchange #'s... I am praying for you. You will do well.

Iamworship, this is sooo true. Your post is really inspiring, but this is the key. So many times we (I) try to "pump up" the people as if P&W was a concert. Instead, we (I) should worship ourselves and try to help the congregation worship. But it's so much easier to "beat" them into worship, if you know what I mean.

Bless you, IAW. Your post made my day.
