Help! I feel like I'm in a rut....
« on: April 20, 2004, 01:08:48 AM »
Can someone give me a suggestion on how to find a rhythm of my own.  I am used to playing by music and am having a terrible time of playing by ear.  Sometimes I even have to stop playing in the middle of a song because I feel like I am not with the choir.  Or maybe I am looking at this the wrong way.  Please help!!!  God bless!!

Other than prayer and practice, it sounds to as as if you are at the point of development where you need to listen to a lot of music . . . . both passively (just for pleasure and praise, in the background while working / etc) and actively (listening for different beats, different parts, etc). Many times I think we underestimate the importance of listening to music . . . we can't play what isn't inside us.

That's my 2-cents . . . what do others think?

Indeed. In Korea, they usually learn to play by music first, so a lot of them feel the same way you do, especially when it comes to gospel music. Korean style music rarely ever has 9th, 11th and 13th chords, so even the sheet music for gospel looks hard for most of them.

I would suggest that you practice playing with drum tracks of some kind or practice with a drummer..Do you have a drummer at church?, if you don't, then I would get some kind of drum machine to lock in the timing..It just takes ALOT of practice!! If you don't have a "natural" sense of timing, then it's going to take some time..just keep practicing with some kind of drum beat, also try playing along with CDs, find a simple song that you know how to play and play along. When you listen to music, really try to point out the beat and listen how the organ or piano sound in comparison to the beat!!!...YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Peace.
