A HINT ON HOW TO SOUND LIKE A MODERN BASSIST...
« on: May 09, 2006, 04:58:24 PM »
...NEVER BE WHERE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE BASSIST WAS THE AT LEAST THE ROOT NOTE IN A CHORD...BEFORE THEY WENT OFF TO RIFF AND SOLO LAND!

BUT NO MORE!

NOW ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO SOUND GREAT IS NEVER COME HOME....

FOR EXAMPLE ....THE PIANIST OR GUITAR PLAYS A7 CHORD.....YOU MIGHT START OUT ON AN A AS A BASSIST...UH...NOT ANY MORE!!!

NOW YOU MIGHT HIT THE 3RD (C#)TO THE 7TH  (G)...TO THE 6TH (F#)THEN OFF TO THE 9TH (HIGH B)....

ALL IN THE SPACE THAT THE OLD SCHOOLER MIGHT HAVE JUST HIT A(A) 1 AND A 5 (E)....!!!!

SO WHAT EVER KEY THAT YOU ARE IN....PLAY WITH THE SCALE THAT APPLIES AND NEVER HIT THE ROOT!

PEOPLE WILL SAY....OOOH....AHHHH...THAT WAS SOOOO COOL!...OH AND THE DEEPER THE BETTER!

No it makes perfect sense because those keys are related.  I lot of South African music starts the root but assumes the root for the rest of the song and towards the end, reminds you of the root.  I don't have many chances to practice this these days but I will when I get a chance.

i don't see the problem with this.  seeing as how all the notes that yhou just stated are part of the A7 with the exception of the 9th (but you can still get away with it).  You aren't persay hitting the true Bass note, but your'e staying true to the tone at the given moment.

What's wrong with that?

not at all...music has taken a tremendous turn....much of the Gospel music now has to do soley with the music and nothing to do with the songs melody!..(just by listening to the music...you would never guess the song)

the traditional approach to music has been tossed and the new vein is to add phat chord changes and the bass lines are wide open because the chord that keyboardists are playing are compounded chords that actually dont have names because they are playing two chords at once....

many guitarists cant play chords against the keys anymore they have to pick and doodle because if they pick a chord it may force the singer into a box....

this is not a complaint...it's just the way it is!

So true!!!  At band rehearsals, I usually try to give chords to my guitarist, but in many cases I can't even figure it out.  A combination of two chords is quite common.

I am experiencing this problem too. I wanna play more Gospel style and I play to standard hitting the notes on time. I was also told to pick my spots and go off the time more often then not. But how do i practise that? casue no matter what tye tribbett, or fred hammond i listen and copy I can never actually play it at church becasue im limited with what the keyboardsit and drummer do.

I wouldn't say that the chords don't have names.  A lot of stuff is done in gospel music that the musicians don't "know" the names of.  My keyboard player is traditionally jazz trained and he can outline almost or name almost any chord you play.  I love our relationship because we help each other grow musically and spiritually.  He has me studing melodic minors now!  There names for these things it's just that there's a stigma associated with gospel musicians amongst the music community as being unwilling to study their craft.  I'm making it my point to shed that.  Because the music is getting more complicated, you will have to study in order to "understand it."  Note I say understand it because you can play things that you really don't understand.  Why do you need to understand it?  Well I let you all answer that question...  I'll give you a hint, you won't be here forever.

Well I listen to it again and it was like my ears got use to it and it sound better. But this modern stuff is NUTZ.
I really think I understand what's going on at one time.the making of a song started with the Words, then the music was built around that.

I think now the music come first then words. So by doing this thing are thrown off by a diffrent feeling.
