I am trying to play hymns like "What  A Fellowship" and "Pass Me Not". Regardless of what I try to do with these songs, I still come out with the same hymnal sound.  Could someone give me some suggestions? Thanks.

No,  I'm not playing from the hymnal.  I am trying my best to become less dependent on reading sheet music and trying to establish a melody line, then harmonize the melody of the song and then include the bass notes.  This is very new to me because during my 5 years of piano lessons, I was taught very little music theory or improvisation.

Oooooo...you're in my kitchen now. I love to make hymns sound churchy. I'll post a video clip showing how to add a little seasoning to these hymns.

I'm unable to play the video, because the video stops playing every 3 seconds or so.  Is there anyway I can download this video, save it on my desktop, so I will be able to view it.  Thanks.

Thanks Sam for the video.   The Pentecostal sound is what I'm trying to achieve.  I play "What A Fellowship" in the key of C.  What notes do I play for a "walking bassline" and when are the right hand chords played? :-\

If you're familiar with you scales in C its the same format as in G. Practice playing the melody on the top of the chords you're using in C and add the basic blues scale bass. Pentatonic scale is the basic blues scale - C E G A C then the Pentantic scale for F - F A C D Eb - and so on.

Here are some for when you are really lost and don't have a clue of how the Hymn goes.

Try these chords, That will help!

Do in this order.

Eb (chords)

Bb/BbEbG
Bb/AbCF
Bb/GBbEb
Eb/EbGBb
G/C#EbGBb
Trust in the Lord and do good so shalt thou dwell in the land and verily thou shalt be fed.
