Harmony???
« on: May 24, 2006, 04:42:25 PM »
Hey Yall...

What up yall great music theoriticians....

Got a question...Is there such a thing as teaching harmony "the wrong way"

Here is my thing.. I think and think only.. The director has to be wise and know the singers very well. Director must know their ability and etc.. if you can not harmoinze just like the Cd... I think you can make your own harmony as long as it is pleasing to the ear and it is not clashing with other parts. I spoke with a seasoned musician today and he agreed... I just want yall opinion...

One reason why you have to know your singers is because their voice may not be developed as other choir, singers that they may be compared too.. My singers sing well however.. they can not sing really high.. so I mostlly do two part harmony.. I REFUSE TO RUSH AND GET TO THREE PART HARMONY... I REFUSE TO RUSH IT!! There more effects of harmony than singing diffrent pitches.. there are some things that could cause the servce to flow in another way... BE CAREFUL AND USE WISE JUDGEMENT.. What do yall think?

I think you can find your singers top vocal range (starting from the Soprano) and use three-part harmony from there. There's nothing wrong with using what you've got, and you can still use the three-part harmony that's on the CD (especially if you're only talking about range and not inability to hear all three parts).

Use different inversions to achieve the same desired effect. Try it.
Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

I agree.
Sometimes we have to lower the key from the orginal.  Thank goodness for transposing abilities.

I think that if you know the way chords, any chords, are structured, finding harmonies really shouldn't be that hard. Start with the soprano who usually sings the melody, and work your way down from that. Once you get used to the way the melody is structured, you can phrase the harmonies around that.
I would say that if you want to structure harmonies on your own, learn how the chords are structured. Listening to the CD helps, but you can't rely on that.
