Guitar Lessons?
« on: June 01, 2006, 02:01:44 AM »
First I would like to apologise if this question has been asked before. Anyway, is it necessary to have guitar lessons to learn to play guitar or is it possible to learn on your own? If it is possible to learn on your own, what would be the best effective strategy to learn. I've always love the sound of guitars (esp. acoustic) and I would really like to help my church because we don't have a guitar player. Any help would be greatly appreciated. --God Bless--

Hi Vangelist

Learn three or four chords first (A, D and E, then G, C, D and Em).  These are simple chords.  The first 2-3 weeks are the hardest.  Get a book or use the net to learn how to play them.  Find a song that you really like so that learning will be more enjoyable.  With these three or four chords you can play heaps of songs including Amazing grace.  It will be beneficial to at least get some tips from a person.  You can soley use an instructional book, but this is really a lesson anyway.  Hang out with guitar players and they will give you lessons without even knowing it.  Ask questions.

Cheers

Every one is different their are allot of self tough people in here, but I'm just like you in a way. my church did not have a guitar player and I also love the sound of the guitar. when I got my guitar I had books and tapes, I didn't get anywhere there were things I want to know and the book couldn't answer that. so I have a teacher and all my uncles play so I can play a few songs know, trying my own thing know I inspired some one to play the bass. and he's coming along allot faster than me not because the bass in easier but I'm up their with him teaching him the little I know and I'm learning from him. the way music is today it's best to have a teacher or someone who can play

When I started I didn't know anyone who played so I bought a chord book, a beginner song book, and a scales book. Its very Important to get a good foundation as a beginner. If you want to learn fast you should concentred on developing hand coordination. The ability to control your individual fingers is crucial. Practicing scales everyday before you play anything will help you control your fingers.
Learn the instruments parts also and how to tune it. This takes time so the more time you put in to it the faster you improve. Make practicing fun. I practiced with the drum machine on a cheap keyboard running scales faster and faster. It was amazing how I progressed. Play with other musicians who will work with you. There will be times when you get frustrated. Just put the guitar down and go back to it later. I still do that and I've been playing for 4 yrs. There are instructional videos they help too. Fill free to ask if you have any concerns I will be glad to heip.  God Bless!

Regardless of how you learn to play (internet, videos, lessons, group, osmosis, etc), a certain level of sef-discipline and self-motivation is required to learn how to play.
Things won't just come to you without putting in time and effort...and maybe a little money.
There are resources all over the internet and even here through the great studies that uriahsmusic offers. Take advantage of it all.
And always ask questions.
I will say that one big plus of taking private lessons is the available one-on-one and instant feedback that a skilled teacher can give you so that you don't develop potentially bad habits that are harder to break over time.
Still, adequate time devoted to study is priceless.

I've had people come to lessons that I teach only to see them not progress at all mainly because they put no time into study and practice between lessons. So you've got to be willing to put in the work in order to reap a reward.

Also, rememeber that playing in church is not simply playing in church...it's worship. It's a sacrifice of praise. It's responding to a call of servanthood that God has placed in you to rise up, be equipped, and serve while giving Him all of the glory and it's also a call to evangelism; so that others may see and praise their Father in heaven.
Music theory is not always music reality.

I started when I was very young learning basic chords out of a book.  Then, I would do a lot of listening, and every time I heard something I liked I would figure out how to play it, or ask an older musician how to play it.  I'm sure I would have become a lot better a lot faster with lessons . . . but God has blessed me.

Regardless of how you learn, you have to learn basic chords first . . . and you CAN learn those out of a book, or off an internet site . . . so start somewhere!  There are a lot of good posts in the archive and Uriah posts some awesome clips.

Thanks everyone. I am so encouraged to learn the guitar more now than ever. I am sure that I will be not only a good musician, but a masterfully, skilled musician. I know it will take much time and work, but I'm willing to do what it takes to turn this desire into something that God can get the glory out of. Thanks again and defretboy keep you eyes open cause I will definitely be asking questions.
