Hey Hammondgyrl! First of all I wanna say that I'm still learning to recognize the key of the song by looking at the key signature. I play by ear and I don't really read music, but I remember when I was taking piano lessons, that my teacher explained a pretty simple way of determining the key of the song by the key signature. She said: "If the key signature has no sharps or flats, it's in the key of "C major".
"If it has just one flat, that means you're in the key of "F major".
Now here's the rule to determine the sharps: The key signature is "ONE-HALF STEP ABOVE the LAST SHARP..." FOR EXAMPLE: IF A KEY SIGNATURE HAS FOUR SHARPS, THEN THE LAST SHARP IS A "D" SHARP. THE KEY SIGNATURE IS ONE-HALF STEP ABOVE THAT, THEREFORE, IT IS IN THE KEY OF "E".
Now, when looking at a key signature with flats, here's the rule to follow: "THE KEY IS THE SECOND TO THE LAST FLAT IN THE KEY SIGNATURE." FOR EXAMPLE: IF THE KEY SIGNATURE HAS FOUR FLATS,
Bb, Eb, Ab and Db, THEN THE SECOND TO THE LAST WOULD BE "Ab", AND THAT WOULD BE THE KEY THAT THE SONG IS IN. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU! IT HAS TRULY HELPED ME!
GOD BLESS YOU, BROALLAN
