NEED HELP PLEASE...
« on: July 24, 2003, 01:07:51 PM »
:D

Ok just when I think I'm understanding everything. I don't... When I try to play the chords that are posted it's not sounding like the song.  I am not really understanding how the chord progressions work either. I am a beginner but God has blessed me to figure out how to play a little something for my church, But I want to understand what I'm playing and how to create and play with other also. So can some one tell me where to start.

The first place to start is learning inversions for your chords. Check out the lessons on what they are and how to utilize them in the lessons/music theory section (under the main menu to the left...you can also search for additional information on inversions online). Once you learn that, try placing different inversions in those chords to get the sound you desire, that's most likely why it isn't sounding like the song, you're not playing inversions that can make the song sound like it's supposed to sound. Another thing to keep in mind, is that what people post isn't going to always sound just like the recording, they try to post as close to it or their own version.

So after you learn, understand, and master inversions, you'd want to learn ninth, eleventh, thirteenth, and altered chords (if you don't know them already...you probably play them and don't know it...and if that's the case try to learn why it is you're playing that so you can use that theory and use it to play more chords). After that, you can tackle voicing. Voicing is what makes your playing sound full. You can acheive that many ways, a few are drop two voicing, third and seventh voicing, root and fifth voicing, quartal voicing, polychords (or as Hammondman refers to it superimposed chords...same thing), and the list goes on and on.

All this information can be found on this site, search through all of the lessons and theories here. Then you can expand your search to the internet and find more sites by using a search engine and find more sites that have this information. Also try to invest in some theory books, progression (jazz) books, and chord books, those will really be a big help to you as well. You can find many of these books at a music store in your area. If you can't find a store near you, start your search at Mel Bay Publishing ( http://www.melbay.com ) they have great books and many of them are in music stores.

Hope that this all helps you in some way. Don't give up, keep at it, remember we've all been there at some point...you can do it.
