Practicing without a set
« on: October 10, 2006, 03:00:17 PM »
What's up guys? I hear everyone talking about the books that are available to help take people like me to the next level. I've played in church all my life, and got formal training from middle school through high school (I had a chance to be apart of the marine corps band but got tripped on a absolutely unbeliveable sight reading piece). However, that was about 10 years, 3 kids, 1 wife, 1 house, and 2 cars ago. Anyway my question is for those who don't own a drumset. How and what do you pratice. I'm still pretty decent when it comes to rudiments, but I'm concerned with coordination between hands, and feet. How do you practice without a set?

Well...this may sound stupid, but I used to put a couple of sheets of newspaper over my thigh...it sounds like a snare.  I would work on my coordination and what not that way,....use drum sticks and practice hitting on my thighs.... You could also check out Ebay or Musiciansfriends.com...they have some very decent CHEAP sets...especially on EBAY.  Maybe you could get in practice time at your church...if you have a key and get permission...there are also drum pads....

I USED TO PLAY IN THE AIR, ON MY PILLOWS ANY THING I COULD MY HANDS ON OR MY STICKS ON... BUT THE BEST THING TO DO FOR NOW PRACTICE YOUR RUDIMENTS ON SOMETHING THAT DOESNT GIVE YOU NO REBOUND!

Yo I feel ya. Now I know a lot of cays do this. You'll be sitting in a chair and you start making up licks and grooves just by patting on your legs and using the ball or the hell of your foot as a the bass. Due to the fact that the set at church is what I practice on during rehearsal and service but the leg and foot thing is he eay I practice without a set.
