That was a very interesting read.

As for the topic, as an Organist, just give me a drummer who can keep the pocket, do occasional tasteful fills and makes the hits with the band. Seems like too many drummers are in their own world doing their own thing  (wack fills, playing very wild and very loud).....not that other instrument players dont do the same, but it seems more common among drummers and its much much worse when a drummer does it because of their role in the music.

just speaking from my experience.

Lots of times the drummer is the unobserved hero of the band. His job is not to be flashy like the guitarist or out front like the singers or keyboardist, but to provide the rhythmic support and foundation for everyone else. That takes a lot of humility...

Ah man. So true. A lot of us had to be broken in order for us to understand that. Or just had to go back and get our priorities in check and maybe even redo everything we practice from scratch. Its kind of bothersome for me to see drummers doin' licks everywhere and they get credit for doing nothing basically while there's a drummer who knows his role and does it modestly or great and doesnt get any credit at all. One of my pet peeves.

I personally feel like a lot of guys are listening to people like Spanky and Chris Dave and tune out any pocket playing that they perform. It's like selective hearing. The only thing that they want is the chop. The placement and timing doesn't even matter.

If we have any basketball players here, think about when the And 1 mixtapes came out. When a lot of guys saw Skip and Hotsauce for the first time, all their fundamentals went out the door. Guys will practice the craziest moves that are just not called for all the time. Most time it just disrupts the flow and hurts the team.

Chris Dave, Skip, Spanky, and Hotsauce are all great and unique, but they all understand their role and know there is a time and place for everything.
