What type of guitar do you prefer for worship?
« on: January 04, 2007, 12:14:13 PM »
What guitar is best used for slower worship songs, like "How great is our Go" if it's just the guitar and 1 person singing, no back up band...

would it be electric, acoustic-steel, or acoustic-nylon (classic)?

acoustic steel, although a nylon string would work if there weren't any other instruments. (i think it would get swallowed up by a full band)

Next week will be my first guitar that i'm purchasing and i'll be singing and doing praise and worship... i had to tell my drummer to step down becaues of disobidience, and the list goes on... so i want to transit from keyboard and singing for slower worship songs to guitar.. it's something about that guitar that i just love.

Either steel or nylon string acoustic would be fine for solo worship.
The thing to watch for with either is that the sound is not too bright on the steel string and not too dark on the nylon string.

If you'll be running through a PA system most of the time then I recommend one of these:

A Godin A6 is what I use at church when it's just me and a guitar or me w/ the piano. Sounds like an acoustic, plays like and electric and cost around $500 last time I checked.
There's also a Seagull A6 that's identical, just a different name on the headstock.
Music theory is not always music reality.

Yup....great utility guitars for praise & worship.  :D

Comfortable with low easy action (because it's basically a Godin LG Series electric guitar neck style).

Very good feedback response compared to full-bodied acoustic guitars.

I use the Seagull version Dave mentioned above....it's called a Seagull SA6.

I got my Seagull guitar (in Black) off eBay for about $350 with VERY nice gig bag.
My friend got his Godin A6 (natural finish) off eBay with hard case for about $420.

I use my Ovation (steel string, see the picture) for acoustic worship.  It's not too bright and "folksy" sounding, I can do latin guitar stuff on it when called for.

For me it really depends on the song. But if it is just a guitar and vocal I like to use my Ovation for it. I think it's annointed. I really do. There is just something about it and worship :)

I use either my Takamine or Epiphone acoustic/electrics. If I have my Telecaster there,I use the neck postion and turn the bass up and treble down on amp for that acoustic-ish tone. It doesn't sound acousticly, but comes close.

A good Ovation acoustic/electric will do well.  If you get a strat on the neck pickup with the volume rolled back, or something like an epiphone casino (any nice Jazz Guitar) you can get a very positive sound.
