keyboard pattern
« on: July 09, 2004, 11:13:02 AM »
Hello, I am from Hong Kong.  I can play by ear for a lot of pop song in Hong Kong.

However, I feel it is not enough for me. Although I learnt the theroy in the book, I think I can't apply it in a song. For example, when I know there is a C chord, I simply strik the chord or play the notes from the chord.

When I hear some pro keyboard player play the same song, it sounds very very good. are they playing other chord? I don't know.

1. Is there a something called keyboard pattern I must learn? Any book or website introduce that?

2. When will use the altered chord?

alswi, you don' t have the whole picture. You only have part of the harmonic picture. when I see Cmaj, the first thing I think about is where is the melody. I am going to voice my chord downward, starting from the melody pitch(s). The next pitch down might be g or maybe e or maybe d or maybe c . I might play the seventh next maybe b and e in my right hand. Maybe c-g-c in my left hand. Maybe I'll play an a with an e and d in my right hand. Why not these are colors of tone. the 6th a the 9th d. I can voice the pitches close together or I can open up the sound with Perfect 5ths and 6ths.  I could go quartal and play from the top down c-g-d-a-e-c wow that gives me three perfect fourths  and a third.No one will tell you this.  They will stand by and watch you fail, over and over. Your chords will never sound right.  They know it but they won't tell you what you are doing wrong.Usually people don't give advice unless someone asks them. You wrote to this web site because you needed help.  I had the option of not helping you, or giving you some advice.  I chose to help
The greatest mistake most amateur musicians make is giving up.  Don't give up !!!

alswi;

There is a beginner book I got from HearandPlay.com that is really good for beginners for you to start. It also has alot theory.

Also, go to the Music Theory section and print out the scale and chords charts. It good to learn the scales and chords in every key.  This will help you to play consistantly and your ear will pick up the chords and you will begin to play more quickly.

And, go to the Message Board and go to the lesson room - Lisa has posted some awesome lessons on reading music. Hope this helps.

In fact, I already have had the theroy book of HearandPlay.com

 JUST think how to apply the theory into a song like a pro keyboard  player.
