« on: June 13, 2005, 02:28:24 PM »
I want to see who out there knows their theory.
How many augmented chords are there?
How many diminished 7th chords are there?
Put your thinking caps on gang!

Hey!  If my memory serves me right and if I paid attention in  class,
I believe there's four of each, and the rest are inversions... am I right?

Augmented chords and diminished 7th chords

Four augmented and three deminished 7th's.  After that, they began to be "permutations" or as most people woud say "inversions".  Technically, inversions refer to the bass notes and permutations refer to chords.  Now depending upon where you put the bass in these cords, this determines the name of the chord.  So essentially there are 12 augmented and 12 deminished 7th's, but after the 4th augmented chord and the 3rd deminished chord, they began to look like the previous ones (cousins).  I hope this makes sense to you and answers the question to you satisfaction. :)

Hearing Chords

Studying theory actually helped my ear get better because I’m starting to get to the point where I can hear a chord and name it. After I figure out the key, I can do a decent job with accompanying a song.

I don't naturally have a good ear. Last night though, I surprised myself. I was listening to a song on the radio and heard a chord progression that sounded cool. I sat down at my piano, figured out the key in about 2 seconds and just started playing the chords to the song. The chords were simple, but that was the first time I ever did that so easy.

What about the half-diminished 7th chord?  Do they get included, or are you just talking about fully diminished 7th chords?
