Chords for speak to my heart
« on: July 30, 2004, 07:17:27 AM »
does anyone have the chords for "speak to my heart."  I live in England and have never been to a church where they play black gospel.  I am however have heard this song being sung by Faith Evans and I really like it.  It goes something like speak to my heart, holy spirit"  if anyone has the chords please help.

Oh and by the way I am a newbie but i have a  tip.  If u have a major chord triad like c which is made up of c e and g try putting the 2nd note of the major scale in the bass. so i mean play d in the bass or with your left on a piano and the triad with your left.  It sounds jazzy.  u know probably its something u all already know but atleast i said my tip for the day.  God be with u all.

The song was orginally recorded by New York Restoration Choir and recorded some years later by its songwriter, Donnie McClurkin. The chords can be found were posted on this site some time ago but have most likely been copied on to http://www.earnestandroline.com , so you may to check there.

I just learned that Donnie McClurkin was with the New York Restoration Choir. I knew he wrote it. I can recognize his voice on the original recording, about 10 years ago. All others are remakes by other artists. You should have a posting for this song. It has a simple melody, and simple harmony. It can be played by a beginner and taught to a choir easily. I taught it to my fifth grade classes about 5 years ago. The school system frowned on teaching that in a public school. Frivolous law suits and all. I mixed in enough secular songs to cover myself on the program where we gave the performance. They sang it in unison.
D bass with CMajor Triad on top. is actually a Dmin 9 sus4 no 3rd and no 5th. Yes it's jazzy but it is a minor tonality, not Major. It is not a passing bass. Nor is it in inversion as a C Major chord add 9 with D in the bass. It is definitely a compound chord. To be considered a passing bass the D would have to pass to another note in a progression.
Solomon said it best there is nothing new under the sun. We have a lot of young people in the world who haven't been around very long, and think they are creating something new. Many times to find it has already been discovered. Music is an old science. These pc's are another story. ha ha ha.
The greatest mistake most amateur musicians make is giving up.  Don't give up !!!
