"abakwa" patterns
« on: March 22, 2007, 07:42:30 PM »
they are groupings of  three triplet notes with a triplet rest which adds up to a grouping of four,
creating a polyrhythm 4 over 3..
I think spanky was doing someone like that on his tama clip..
Anyone else experimenting with this?

You are correct my good man!  I discussed this a little but on a thread in the past.  I was explaining this to one of the cats on the board (who is no longer with us).  This idea was placed in front of me by a piano player named Michael Kocour.  He was a clinician at my high school my sophomore year.

The link below has a very general application of the pattern and what it is.  You'll have to scroll down a little bit to find it, but the info is there.

Holla back if you need a little more info.  You know I got you E.

We're here.

I'm intrigued by this... still working on & trying to grasp the concept.

check out JuSe's thread.. it explains how it is counted with the rests.
The sticking is up to you.. its triplets.. so you can orchestrate with hand/foot combo's, RRR, LLL, RRL, LLR, accents..etc..
the abakwa is played in 6/8.
JuSe's gonna post some clips.. So we all can get a better idea of how its played.
Check out Spanky's clip on tama site.. you with hear it..
