The songs to start with depend on the type of church you are attending.  For instance, if you are COGIC, COGA, of Full Gospel Baptist, you can be versatile in the songs that you choose.  As far as rates for ministers of music, it varies on church size and so forth.  Just use your good judgement. :D

Eww. When God tells you to! I know some musicians that got tired of playing where they were playing and some that just wanted to get paid "like everyone else". Most of these people left too early, and God stunted their musical growth. They then wonder why some things are too hard for them to play or comprehend. Remember, if you're in God's will, no matter what you're doing, he'll make a way for you. If you're a musician, and your choir wants to sing a song, he'll show it to you, whether he has to use someone to show it to you, or even if he shows it to your through your practice sessions. I can use myself as a testimony for this.

When I first started playing in church, I was taught by the resident minister of music. After three years, I ended up being the main musician, though I never received the title of "minister of music", and this was ok with me. I then started to receive a lot of offers to play with other choirs and at other churches. This same thing is happening to me right now, at the church that I play at, there is already a competent musician, a korean one at that, and he's pretty good too; however, it's working out that I'm leading more and more songs. I thank God for this, because I love to play, and I love it even more when I can feel God guiding my hands on the instrument that I'm playing. All that said, let God lead you and tell you when and if to move. You'll get better results that way.

(We have a pretty big bad, in my opinion, 3 keyboards, my organ, a drummer, a bass, and a sax player.)

My things I have been under someone for years that I feel has not brought me up to the best of his ability.  I played as a highlight person never really learning the meat of songs.  It was not until I had to play by myself that I realized that there was so much I did not know, but at the same time I did know.  I realized that I learned more playing on my own because I did not have to no one else to rely on but Jesus and myself.  Since then I have played for a church just one Sunday out of the month and that taught me more about playing.  For years I let fear keep me back because I was afraid to make mistakes in front of people.  Now I learned to have faith and step out and believe God for my gift.  Also now doors are opening to where I can become the Minster of Music with some time, but some feel I have not had enough experience under some one to do that.  I have been in several rehersal I have taught a choir a songs once or twice but it is not hard. What are your thoughts about taking the position of minster of music.  It will start out as a musican first and then later turn into minster of music

Remember this:

If you put God first, no one can hold you back, because the Word says that no weapon formed against us shall prosper. Even if the person doesn't teach you all they know, which rarely anyone does, God will still make a way for you to learn what He has for you to learn. Your gift may not be the same as the other person's gift. God may even use music to lead you to someone else, where He then gives you another gift to do something totally different, with you leaving music behind. (This is something that God has for me, even though I love to play, I know that when it's time, I won't be playing as often. I'll have to accept that, or I'll be out of God's will.) The same thing goes for your walk with God, we're not just here to be "musicians" our ultimate goal is to be ready when He comes back. We should lose site of that, when learning all of that there is to learn about music. As musicians, first, we should get ourselves right, then use our music to draw people to God. Do this, and God will show you what you need to learn, whether you become an official "minister of music", which all musicians are by nature, or not. You already are a minister of music, as is everyone else on this site, the key word being "minister". You don't need for someone to tell you that. Now, if God places you somewhere to be minister on a permanent basis, then take it. If you're unsure if it is God that's telling you to go then maybe you should fast about it.

I agree that is what I was feeling with my faith in God and knowing that whatever I don't have as for as a gift God will give to me.  I don't belive that God would open doors for me without giving what I need to do his will.  That is what is carrying me into this new church
