pretend to play eventually pretense becomes reality.
« on: June 01, 2007, 10:06:00 AM »
I saw a movie the other day and a woman was teaching a girl how to read with sight words
for those not aware of sight words it is  way of teaching you how to read using pictures over the word

when done right the child eventually begins to recognize the words without the aid of the picture.

in the movie a man asked the woman is she reading or is she pretending to read

the woman said she is pretending but eventually pretense becomes reality.

ok what does this have to do with playing and learning how to play the piano or keyboard.

well I have often advocated playing along with albums or cd.s I hae stated that if you just play along even if you are only playing a couple of right notes in the biginning eventually you will be able to play the music fully.

this is exactly the same concept  as sight words

dont try to analyze the music dont stop the tape to catch the chord you missed  just keep on pretending to play
play whatever you can catch a piece of the meody  a vocal phrase
part of the bass line
part of the intro

a   lick or run

play the whole album and do it every day

eventually almost magially you will notice you are playing more and more of the song.

soon in your own playing you will begin to drop in new techniques and moves that you never knew you had in you
chose your style or artist that you want to duplicate and pretend you are on stage with them
playing whatever you have to play inorer to stay with  the band

this is the pretense

after a while you will be playing along not just pretending

this is the reality

the pretense became reality

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

Sounds like a great concept ...

Question,  "What fundamental skills and knowledge, would you say, is necessary to implement this
concept into practice?

                 Thanks,   BroAllan

Good question
I think it is about maing pretense reality then i dont think you need anything to start

john peteres who is a beast said that he started out playing just simple melodies and gradualy addd to it bit by bit

so just play along the best you can making no judgements aobut how well you are doing just pretend to play like you are on stage

catching whatever you can
To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

I could be wrong about this but it seems like to do it, you would need the skill of folowing the system to a tee, and not stopping like diverse said. That would be the hard part; knowing you missed a chord or a tight lick, and you have this burning urge to stop and pick it up right then and there so you could really feel like you've learned something, but you hav to keep on going without rewinding or anything because to not stop or go back is a part of the system......................Thats hard.

Interesting ...  I'll give it a try, but I think it's gonna be a little bit difficult resisting the urge to stop and figure out a chord that I don't recognize.  After all, that's years of training one way, and now a whole new different method.   :P

                    Thanks,    BroAllan   :)

wow cs you hit me in the head just now

i think you get this thing better then I do

what is really a trip is that is that br o allen who has been playing for a yeas as he says want to try this

to me it is the difference between phonics a and learning sight words

phonics has you analyze every thing sound words out
sight words just has you pretending to read because the pictures are there

i will tell you I did this last year with kirk franklin and
i hadnt watched the movie yet so I didnt make this connection

but i would spend about an hour each day playing along with his records

I wouldnt rewind but I would occassionally stop the tape to play a particular example

(I think this is part of the pretending or the pretense because when you stop the tape it is as if you are taking the solo

i thik this is part of the success as well

Bro Allen

another thing I am reminded of is

The scripture come to the kingdom of heaven as a small child.
I know i said that wrong but you know the scripture I hope
a small child does just accept naturally and because he really cant get every move right he just keeps going pretending and having fun

the best way to teach a small child martial arts is too just expose them to it
do the forms in front of them let them see some movies practice in front of them and you will see them imitating eventually you begin to incorporate drills to teach proper form and later you teach discipline and once again the pretense became reality.

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word
