Eliminating annoying overtones!!???
« on: June 09, 2007, 06:44:26 PM »
I have another tuning issue.... Too many over tones...  I think it may be the stock reso head I have on it!! I have g2's on all the toms and they sound good.. But It is so hard for me to get the reso sides to cooperate :-\ Should I try a g1 on the batter?

Its an Intermediate kit (Mahogony) and they usuallly have alot of overtones!! Im just trying to eliminate some so that I can get a clear clean sound! My kick Is fine I got It the way I want it but its just the toms I m having trouble with!!

Try changing the resonant head - maybe it's worn out.  Those are one of the most neglected items on the drum kit.  Also, there is a 'magic tuning rod' that could drastically alter the tone fro your drum.  Once you mess with that one (or two), you're going to be in for a long day, lol!  You could try a G1, but I would say to experiment with the batters also.  Maybe the batter head is not the head for those drums.  We often try to force fit some heads, mostly to follow the status quo or for mostly cosmetic purposes (just to match).

For example, I have an 8" tom at church, and I use a REMO Ambassador on the batter and the resonant side.  This is done for the most sustain for that small drum.  IMO, I feel that a two-ply on that sized drum does not allow it to speak as freely as it should (if you're going for a open and full tone).  On the 10" and 14", I use REMO's Smooth White Emperor, which gives is the sound that is in between a coated and a clear head.  For the resonant side, I use REMO's Ambassador clear.

Although it's not aesthetically pleasing (to the eyes), it produces the desired tones that I want to hear from the toms.  I say just go wild and experiment and find the sound that you're after.

Never thought about the smooth white heads!! ::) ?/? 8)... The kit came with the G2's but they sound good to me... But the 16" Is a problem also. I was thinking about going with an Coated Emperor for warmth on the 16". As long as I get the sound I looking for, I don't mind having different types of heads!!... for the 10" Im sticking with the G2 clear and the 12", I haven't decided yet... The 8" Is getting another head because Im looking for more sustain with it.

If you're looking for more sustain, use a single ply head.

Just make sure that you get plenty of batter heads if you play through the drum.  Price match if you buy local.

Don't forget that you are dealing with two separate notes when tuning your drums. Overtones are also caused by dis-harmony of the notes from the two heads. Just spend more time getting them in tune and don't get frustrated
Mapex Drums, Grant Custom Basses, Carparelli Basses, Istanbul Cymbals,!

Thanks To both J-Kay and BBD!! I will try both methods... Your right BBD i can't allow myself to get frustrated because in the past If I would have mad, I would have just slapped a Remo-Ring on the drum a be done..  ;)That is why I love LGM, you guys are a big help!! :D
