New Developments......in addition to some older ones.

For those of you who can make the clinic this applies to you, to those that were just coming to the Jam...YOU GOTS TO COME TO DA CLINIC.  In addition to Calvin & Lil John..there may be another cat doing some things.  JONATHON DAVIS...

Also, we will have some giveaways in the clinic from Lisa McClendon, which may be presented by Lisa McClendon herself if all works out with her schedule.  Fred Hammond has also donated some DVD's and CD's.  We have others that have donated as well, but until they get here, I won't mention from who.  Also what just happened a few mins ago, Dynasty Drums will offering the opportunity to get one of their custom snares at a huge discount.  It will be on display at the clinic in addition to their info so you can get your custom drum done up.  Hopefully I wll be able to get some stuff from Covenant and our boy Rick out their too.

Man, this is picking up steam the closer we get...we also have some other surprises at the clinic too that I won't mention yet...so you got to be there.  This is gonna be HOT!

I couldn't make it to JAX.
How did the clinic come off?! I know it was hot but can the attendees and facilitators chime in.

It WAS hot.  I still haven't recovered yet as I didn't get home til 3 somehting this morning.  But Calvin Lil John and Jonathoan Davis did there thing big time.  And the guys in the Jam like Jon Reshard and Jamison Ross.  I'll post a link for some still pics later, and hopefully someone will post some video, cuz everyone seemed to have a camera.  Not one person left unhappy.  A number of people mentioned thatthey were upset that it had to end.  The reaction from everyone was just off the hook.  These guys just killed everything.  WHen Calvin was doing his thing, Everyone went crazy to the point it seemed Calvin kept losing his thoughts.  Lil John was funny man.  He kept yelling "Oh!.....Oh!"  Thats all anyone could say.  It was that hot.  My favorite parts (4)were 1.  Lil John's part of the clinic (they did this song and were phenominal), 2.  when Calvin (drums), myself(congas), Lil John *drums) and Jamison Ross (drums) played with Calvin as he gave a taste of something from his new album,  2. Jon Reshard Killin on the bass, he is truly one of the best.  He had cats mesmorized and 4. Jonathon Davis.  That dude has mad independance and he doesn't just chop it up.  When he uses those monster chops, they fit. Hopefully people who attended will chime in, and hopefully get on my myspace page and make a comment in the blog about the clinic.

I just want to add this too.  Cuz it means a lot to me.  This was my first clinic that I out on.  I got a tremendous amount of help from Calvin, Lil John, and Davon Jamison.  The 1st thing that makes this inportant to me, is that you would think an artist gets contracted for a show, shows up gets paid and goes home.  Calvin helped so much to make this happen, making calls to people, lining things up.  he did so much, not just show up.  That says a lot to me about Calvin Rodgers.  I couldn't have pulled it off without his help.  Secondly, I have been in contact with Lil John, Calvin, and Davon constantly over the last couple of months.  They all went above and beyond the call to make this happen......but the 1st time I met Lil john face to face was like 3 weeks ago.  1st time I met Calvin and Davon was the day prior to the clinic.  These three guys who I never met like I said went above and beyond the call, while people who I do know personally did little or nothing to help.  This speaks volumes to me of the Character of Lil John, Calvin, and Davon.  I could not have done any of this without their constant help and encouragement...cuz believe me.  I needed the encouragement at times.  I feel fortunate to have met such caring and driven individuals.

This was a cool clinic. Definetly worth the  3 hour drive and the ten bones. What I liked most about the clinic was the fact that all the clinicians were very professional, approachable, humble and they exemplified a great deal of knowledge about their craft. No big heads here. These cats were serioulsy down to earth.

Lil John Lumpkin ( The Definition of Groove) did an excellent rendition of “Spider” from the Ronald Bruner Jr. CD. which if I may add is NOT and easy song to play.(Good lookin out Drumma-Sheen for putting me up on that CD like 2 years ago).  If you are a drummer and haven’t heard this yet, you need to find it.   Lil John's Bass player (CRAZY NICE),  Sax player, and percussionist  ;D  were all on point.  Anyway what I like about John was his dynamics. He is very explosive and will catch you of guard and make you P on yourself if you aint careful. Natural Beastly Instincts.  Great job homey!  Consistency and Repetition!! Well Said Bro.

Calvin's Rodgers presentation was simply awesome. He didn’t start of with a bunch of technical jargon, he said a couple of brief words sat down and went right into “Where the Praise are” by Vashawn Mitchell. Now let me add that he had every song tracked out to include the lead and Background vocals just as it was recorded. Everything except the drums. So it was almost like being at a concert. Now if you have the Vashawn Mitchell CD you know that immediately after “Where the Praises are” comes “ No Way” And Yes, Calvin played right into it just like on the CD. Around the sanctuary musicians began to put there hands in the air praising God. When that song ended, without saying a word or giving us a chance to catch our breath Calvin went right into “This is the Day” by Fred Hammond. Okay!  Now we were officially having church. I could not sit down anymore I had to find my way to an isle because I know that song back and forth and I knew what was coming. You all know that part of the song that im talking about. He did a fill that was so stupid people were literally running around the sanctuary and fallin out like somebody sprayed tear gas in their faces. DUMB! When he finished, somebody could easily have got on the organ hit a B flat and a shout would have broke out. Lil john was laying on the seats yellin OH….. OH…….OH……OH……I couldn’t do anything but laugh because I wanted to say the same thing.  It was basically like we had to have a praise and worship service because after those three songs that atmosphere was charged. Calvin finally stood up whippin his face with the towel and trying to hold back form laughin and Lil John who was crazy funny that night. Calvin spoke a few words that I cant remember because I was still high of the first three songs.   He went on to do “Tell the Devil Im Back” and the song that introduced him to most of us outside of Chicago. “God Of Mercy”.  BRUTAL!!!  He answered some questions and did one more demonstration and that was it.

Now this next statement might warner some sour grapes and cause a thread locking debate but I have to give credit where credit is due and this is not to down play anybody because everybody did an outstanding job but I have to say that…………………………….......... . JOHNATHAN DAVIS WAS THE FREAKIN MAN THAT NIGHT. PERIOD That dude is Half man Half amazin. Be very afraid this cat is hazardous material. He forgot to bring his sheet music (YES, SHEET MUSIC) for his presentation but he made up for it 5000 fold with his insanity on the kit. That skinny dude is crack on the set.

Look out for Jamison Ross. You did your thing too homey.

Shout out to all the Jacksonville musicians who showed up and did their thing. Lil John thanks for making a brother feel welcome on foreign soil. Steve thanks for making me feel welcome and for putting on a great clinic. Sorry it took me so long to reply but yall know I log in once every quarter.

Peace!

No problem. I dont have any journalism skills ;D I just wanted to paint a picture in color for yall,  but dude you had to be there! If I came back in a week and wrote another synopsis it would probably be different because I left out a lot of details. Hands down Calvin did it the way he was supposed to do it. He played songs that we all knew him for and thats what made its so hot. It also gave me a greater appreciation for his playing. He is cut from a different cloth. It would take him to talk about how he sat for two years at his mentors house playing to a click. It reminded me of when a good friend of mines whose name a lot of people may know would invite to his house when I was 15 and play Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Chick Corea, George Duke (VHS) tapes and let me sit in his livingroom and watch them, then get on his organ and try to practice what I heard.  He even let me take some albums home to listen to them. Good mentors are important. 8)
