LOL Man I love these posts! All true, true, true. I've experienced all if this and some.

I hate it when:

1) Our church goes to another church for a second service and after the home church finishes, their musicians stand behind our musicians when we go up and hawk us like we came to put on a show for them or something.

2) When the musican for a soloist is late, so you start to play for soloist and he/she gets there in the middle of the song. Then they sneak up on you to bump you off the organ, but there is a tight space up there so you have to sit on the edge of the bench while they play. Very unconfortable!

3) I play a congregational hymn in a jazzy style and there is a bass player playing it quartet style.

    a) A bass player comes in and sets up all his gear and decides to play with you and he don't know none of the songs.
    b) A bass player comes in with a phat 6 string bass and won't play the bassline. He's busy soloing all over the place, leaving it up to me to play my own bass.  >:( Then when I start to play the basslines, he stops soloing to play the bass, clashing with me.   >:( >:(

4) You are visiting another church and they have one of those old house organs that don't have drawbars and lights up like one of those old Casio keyboards. And sounds like one too! And your choir members take one look at it and shake their head and pat you on the back. LOL

5) When you really need to leave (like for a dinner date, or trying to catch the shed on the other side of town) and the visiting church does not bring a musician and you have to play for them. Then you put your finger up so you can tip out of the church after they are done, but someone catches you on the way out and asks if you would play for them. After that, you then you put your finger up to tip out again and the director for another guest church stops you in the isle to play for their church. argg!!

THANK YOU!!! Drums are my main instrument but I play keyboards for a church so someone has finally been in my shoes.

I know how y'all bruthas feel... I used to play drums, and felt tha same way. BUT EVERYBODY has to keep time.
It's just that the Drummer, not only keep time, but tempo, and other rythm arrangements.

i have been reading the comments that were left and i have to agree with everyone with their pet peeves. i thought that i was the only one who felt certain ways when it comes to praise teams singing their own renditions of songs and then looking at you as if you were wrong....or trying to play behind a soloist who really  not that hot and they tell you to stop(and all you trying to do is make them sound a lil better)...to playing a whole service when your pastor is the guest pastor!!!! it feels really good to know that i am not by myself in feeling certain ways! thanks you guys and gals.

You hit the mark on that one about the soloist. Guess what....I don't even accompany soloist unless we communicate before she sings. If I'm not familiar with the song, I will not play. Acapella never hurt anyone... ;D

Great topic and replies. You all have mentioned many of mine. But, here are a few other:

1. If we are visiting a church and when it's time for our choir to sing, the musician playing is taking his time getting off the organ.

2. When we have a visiting musician and he plays too loud or tries to "outplay" me. That's usually a young showoff... :)

3. None of my drummers show up. Both are under 18, but not that reliable... :(

4. Someone tells me to turn down the organ, it's too loud ?/?

5. Drummer isn't looking at the director or me...just playing in his own world... ?/?

1. I hate playing for people who just cant sing but they say they know the gift that "GOD" gave them (in my mind i'm sayin it aint sangin i'm sure of that)
2. when the drummer cant control the tempo(this dude pushed shoutin music so fast that he couldnt keep up anymore)
3. when other musicians look down on you, until, they hear you play and thats when they become people persons
4. workind with another musician who just dont see that they some growth boy they think everything they do is right and any other way is wrong
5. organ failures get under my skin

There are things that I dislike, however there is noting that I hate.
1. Someone has to take the blame when a singer or singers mess up, and that person is the paid musician.
2. I don't like to play organs that need to be fixed.
3. I don't like to play something other than a Hammond when visiting another church.
4. I don't like speaker malfunctions, including Leslie Speaker switch malfunctions.
5. I don't like loud musicians, who are not accompanying voices, but are soloing up-front and have put the voice or voices in the background with their loud playing.
6. I don't like churches that have their speakers (tone cabinets or Leslies) spread far apart on pedestles like they are in stereo for the church audience and away from the organ, where I can't hear my volume in relation to the singer or singers voices.  One speaker should always be close to the organ.
7. One day I went to a COGIC church and this young woman got up and sang two songs that she made up as she went along. I was stymied.  I have been playing two lifetimes of 40 years. I started taking lessons in 1956, and really stated playing for churches in 1962. Those were two songs that my intuition couldn't help me with. I haven't been frustrated like that since I first started playing. I couldn't even figure out the form of the tunes. I hope I never see or hear her sing again in life. That really made me feel stupid. I left there feeling really down. I didn't expect any pay, and was really trying to help a friend out who said the church needed someone to play for them at that program. That was a real eye-opener. I had just met these people so I guess they thought I didn't know what I was doing.

Always remember that you as a paid musician are an employee, who is working for that church.  Those people are ignorant and not professional, but you are, as a professional you need to know every tune or as least enough about music to fake the tune and make it sound good, regardless of who is singing.  Just as if you were ill and went to a physician for help with a medical problem of which you are ignorant.  Even if the doctor does a good job in diagnosing the problem and finds a soulution, he may be talked about as if he was wrong. Fault finding is easy to do, because most people don't want to admit they are wrong. I just smile sometimes at how truly ignorant most people are.
The greatest mistake most amateur musicians make is giving up.  Don't give up !!!

If I may sound off...not cast any stones at anyone
What tops my list...

1. Being invited to a church to render music and realizing the church has no clue that an instrument tuner/repairperson exists. In other words, some churches have some pretty messed up organs and pianos. Some folk don't be taking care of what has been entrusted to them, which brings me to ..

2.  Guest musicians who come to your church and practically abuse your insturments with their stomping and banging.  I did one time have to invite one particular musician up off my church's Hammond.

3. And like many who have sounded off before me, trying to find a key for someone at the mike trying to sing in key that doesn't exist and this twist...

4....this includes some preachers lol

5. Don't get me wrong, I love this gift God has blessed me with...but I play for a church where I and the drummer are the only musicians and that means  playing each Sunday and any service in-between...so sometimes when I get a chance to visit services or attend programs at other churches, I would like to enjoy the service from the pew and not be called on automatically by someone just because they know I'm a musician (I know that some of you who don't get a chance to play that often would love to be in a situation like that, but as for me....I need to have my batteries recharged and receive a blessing from someone else. (p.s. before I suffer someone's wrath...because hell hath no fury like Holy Ghost annointed church folk..lol...I have never said no when I've been asked to play)

Thanks to whoever decided to get this site and these forums up and running. I also look forward to learning a lot from all of these annointed men and women of God and being blessed by your musical insight.

I know what you mean.  This guy came to our church with his choir and proceeded to doing gymnastics acrobatics on our Hammond.  Needless to say he broke a key and I immediately went up to him while his choir was singing and he was playing and asked him what was he doing and told him he wasn't leaving before he paid.  I got a $100 check before he got of the organ..LOL.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN BOUT!!!  You debo'd him!...LOL
We keep a "do not touch" sign on the B3 at church.  The pastor only wants me playing it.  Since I'm the only musician...when it messes up, it's not because some irresponsible visiting musician has been abusing the instrument.

*note*...people don't care about your stuff...LOL
