« on: September 08, 2004, 10:50:10 PM »
Hey..i'm not african american (an Asian) but i LOVE "black" gospel music...I'm probably the only asian i know that enjoys playing and listening to Gospel music 24/7.. The funny thing was..when i went to HOPEVILLE tour in NEWARK, NJ... i;m NOT kidding..i was THE ONLY ASIAN PERSON IN THE WHOLE ARENA!! There were maybe 2-3 white folks but I was the only asian.. I felt..hmm.. how can I say... some how i didnt really belong there...like an alien..haha..

How many non-blacks do you have in this website? I just want to know i';m NOT the only one who loves gospel music!

Hey... I'm a white guy but I must have been bleached.  I have always been into more urban/ethnic things... my best friend growin up was a brotha.  I ended up getting married to a beautiful sista, we have three children and I LOVE Black Gospel Music.  I guess I'll be one of the few whities at the HOPEVILLE concert if I can get some tickets.   It's comming to Baltimore October 17th...  help me pray that I come acrross some tickets...

God Bless

Hey there,

I'm also white and play "black" gospel at my church.  I have always loved black gospel and only wish it wasn't such a struggle to have it flow freely from me.  My worship leader, worship team and musicians at my church are mostly black (the guitar player, piano player (me) and saxaphone player are white).

I'm determined though to keep at it and play it as easily as I do other music (knowing that the Lord will bless my committment to His music).

Kadman, I'll have to come check you out.  I live in DC.  Ipodnation, not too sure about those on the board, but I knew about three Asians in college who were into gospel music.  They participated in a music group at school called the African American Choral Ensemble.  We performed any music written or arranged by an African American, which included a lot of gospel.  One girl, a piano major, actually accompanied us during rehearsals, but she had to have the music to whatever we performed.  We actually had a couple Indians (from India) in the group, as well as a bunch of Kadman's (white people).  :)

I think it is GREAT to have so many nationalities on this board. I'm a black man, but I play some music that many do not consider "black." Actually, I think the uniqueness of black gospel music is that it simply cannot be reduced to theory . . . much of what we play only works in context of the entire song and actually doesn't make much musical sense by itself.

Boy, it SO great to have a free discussion about nationalities, knowing that God made us all and He LOVES our skin colors and our different cultures.

Oh, by the way, I understand what you mean, Hammondman. I too have been called white many times. I don't understand why, 'cause nobody enjoys being a black man more than I do . . . . I guess it's the way I talk when I teach, maybe . . .

Be Blessed . . .

It may be the "Uncle Tom" stigma...

any person of color that sounds educated or doesn't use urban lingo... I hate to qualify ebonics as a language is labled as an Uncle Tom or sellout by outsiders... and joked with about among friends.  My wife takes pride in sounding educated.   She finds the WG nickname funny.  I was never brought up to hate any race or creed... I don't find it surprising that I married a black woman.  I am actually more comfortable in a church full of black fold than in a mostly white church.  I get to see all the closet bigitry out there from the white folk who DON'T know me and just shake my head and smile on the inside.. cause hatred is a ticket to hell.

I actually find hatred toward me for my bi-racial marriage from both sides of the fense...  I don't care... God put us together and I intend to be that way till God takes us apart.

Go 'head, Brother kadman92. By the way, I get a lot out of your posts.  Hatred towards someone because they are happily married and raising children to the Lord? Oh, well . . . ignorant folks will be ignorant folks, I guess.

Be Blessed, everyone . . .

Thank you my brotha BBoy...   I try only to post when I can contribute to the discussion.

Color is not what makes the person.. it's what's in that person's heart and thier actions.  All races have it's blacksheep.  We can only try to bring them to God and let him take away the ignorance and hatred.

There's a group here in Korea called Heritage of Faith. They are really good, although, I haven't heard them sing any original material yet. Their musicians (professional jazz players) play Gospel (choir songs) better than most of the people that I know.

There was one dude in Detroit who, if you just heard him playing without seeing him, you'd swear he was black. I know I did. However, come to find out, he was chinese....or was he korea. I don't remember. We call all asians chinese in Detroit.  :D

Keep at it. Once you get the rhythm, it's all downhill!

yea i have heard of them but the only "issue" i have with Heritage of Faith is that..hmm if you listen to their music, its too "copy-cat" if you will,  of the original music they are playing..even down to the lead singers "comments" almost word for word.. I think they put too much emphasis on trying to sound exactly the way it is on gospel CD that they lack a lot of originality and freshness.. but that;s just my taste..

P.S. JoyCH...I'm actually a sister in Christ! =) (not a bro)
