A quick question for you pianoist
« on: September 08, 2004, 11:49:55 AM »
Is it necessary to play chords on a piano/keyboard when the whole band is there i.e.(bass, guitar, drums, e.t.c.) I'm asking because my younger brother is learning how to play keyboard and he knows how to play a lot of gospel one finger melodies, but lacks the knowledge of chords. I'm going to get him Jermaine Griggs book when I get up the money, but for now I'm recommeding that he brings his keyboard to church with him and play the one finger melodies only with me on bass, a cousin of ours on drums, and a friend of our on lead guitar. Am I doing the right thing?

You do what you can for God and he increases it through the annointing.  Keep your focus on what you are there for and God will give your brother what to play.  If he can play the melodies do not wait till he learns how to play chords, use him in service now.  Make shure he takes part in rehearsal.  Getting the instructional items is great.  God will help your brother learn all he needs WHEN he needs it.

i dont think that anyone can just sit down at a keyboard or piano their first time in front of people and be the best pianoist there is if he can play the melody let him play the melody he will only get better and more comfortable with his own abilities as time goes on but dont let him just be satisfied with playing the melody encourage him to explore the keys and enhance his play but if everyone in the band is cool with him playing just the melody i say go agead

You plant the seed and let GOd bin forth the harvest. The anointing s not limited or confined to formal instruction. GOd can do and wil do watever he wants to with whoever, he wants too. As lng as the vessel is willing. If your brother is willing- use him. YOu never know when your time to meet the Lord is going to be. Use your gifts for the Lord while you have time. HE will do the rest. I'ts great that you are concerned and that you wat him to excel in his music- he does not need to stop where he is now, b he certainly can start!!! God bless you...  :D

Just a friendly correction, as I have seen the mistake twice.  The word "pianoist" should be "pianist."

As it relates to the subject at hand, what your little bro is doing right now is fine, but as a believer in basic musical training--even if you have to teach yourself, I would encourage you to get a book of scales, arpeggios and cadences.  (Alfred's Complete Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios and Cadences)  The cadences will aid in learning chords and the book, overall, will offer a technical and foundational knowledge of piano playing.

Little will become much when it's placed in the Masters hand.  No one started out with all the phat chords and stuff.  We progress as we go hopefully and nobody knows it all any way.  In having said all that I also know that God wants us to put knowledge with our gifts so I encourage you brother to study.  His progress will then grow by leaps and bounds.  He doesn't have to get a degree in music, unless he wants too, but you can't beat an understanding no matter where you go.  Peace
