I wish I had a more seasoned musician around me right now! a mother of the church was asked to sing a solo she walked up to me and said "im gonna sing you cant hurry God" Lost dont even describe what i was. Hopefully all the "younger cats" are taking the time to read good posts like this one...Too much wisdom out there not to want to respect an older musician-

Just a side note you can be 49 and still be a younger musician.  ;D true growth is determined by studying the word of God, staying humble, discernment, and thoery. Not by how many notches you have or who you've played for. I mean it helps but as a relatively young (22) musician I rather see a sermon than hear one. ya dig?

People have underestimated me when it comes to playing and try to play over me because I play pretty much basic. I have seen younger musicians try to play every trick they have just to show off. Most times I ignore it. If you are confident in your ability you really are not worried about showing off.

U play basic :o :P
I hold a different opinion to yours.
If U think you play basic, I wonder where I'd be rated :P
Man U can play those keys 8)

I think he was saying that he just holds back, instead of playing "out there"

This is a indeed a much needed thread. And like Mysteryman has already stated, people don't want to learn the basics. They expect to instantly play fancy chords and runs, so to speak, but they're not willing to put in the time to learn the BASICS.

I got over this upon discovery of this site, thanks to some wise posts by LGMers.

You can learn all of the fancy stuff that you want but in the long run, its all going to come down to the basics. I've learned from more experienced musicians that you MUST learn THEORY.

That's what I've been trying to tell our guys who are still playing in one key (but ought to now be playing in all the keys) & my sister who dropped her classics lessons a year ago but is now ready to take piano lessons (She is so good in Ab when she's practiced& in C as well, but I keep telling her she'll be a maestro if she practiced in all the keys (in that odd day she opts to practice :P) & stopped transposing all the time..
But as I get better I think she's starting to get what I'll be saying to her.

Now to be honest theory can sometimes be boring. It doesn't make you INSTANTLY sound like (Key-Wiz, trinatrine, soundofjoy, bishopcole, RayJ, mysteryman, ddw4e..etc) but if you learn the basics, eventually you will develop your OWN sound.

Oh really ?/? :D
I know what U mean.
But trying to thing back, I've enjoyed everybit of theory I've covered--Even learning how to read sheet music etc 8)

Maybe it's because @ the back of my head, I always knew that the only way I could ever be an accomplished musician was if I  knew my theory well ...(oh, & then be able to apply it well :P).& every bit of theory I learn takes me closer to my destination...
Theory is FUN (ok, rephrase: FUN= CAPTIVATING 8) & EMPOWERING. ;D

When I first came to LGM all I wanted to do was sound FANCY.
God bless! ;)

Oops! that's me as well :-\ :-[ :D

Thanks for that..
I get it..but still, if he plays like some he does in those midis I've heard, then man do those young cats really play to show off :P

1 lesson I've learnt from a humble pro is that U don't just do "crazy stuff" in a song for the sake of crazy stuff.
Do it when appropriate, not to show off what U can do..
Man, U'r a true musician..

I just love sucking wisdom from those "old" musicians who want to "pass on"...

Never mind those who try to crush our spirits & self-esteem--I also take the good bit I can from them& move on.

1 day I'll be an "old cat" like y'all ;D :D

Now when young cat musician thinks they are all that and bag of tricks. This old Pro has trick up his sleve to finished the job.

I don't like to compete because there is no purpose. I mean I am on one mission one mission only is the preach the word through music.

Now if it gets to the point that I have young cat who doesn't like be cool well I am not alone. Well I have full band that will pull all the stops to make him and the church look bad.

And when we are done well like bishop cole saids,  "THATS A REAL RAPP"

Coming to think of it, it's a bit childish to show off ( which is not good anyway & unGodly!).
why is it childish & foolish:

1) By showing off, U are proclaiming to everyone who is listening that" I am a maestro in this game/ office" (but I think a show-offer treats it as a game rather than a ministry :().
--Immediately people have high expectations of you each time U sit in front of that machine.
If your business is to show off, 1 day, you will be highly embarrased because either some1 better will come 4 show & make U eat dust, or you will be expected to play "that cool stuff U always play" & you'll perform below par..the rest is :'(

---1 pastor told me this 2 weeks ago:
To get pressure off your shoulders, if you are driving a Merc, just put an "L" sign to indicate that you are a learner (even if you're not)..
U can draw your own inferences on the meaning of this Merc story ;)

O my gush. That was deep. I really really agree with that post. I've been playing for 13 year. I'm and now 20 and I respect all the elder musicans b/c they know more then we know even if we don't thank that they do. The sky is the limits off what you can learn on organ so use younger and begginer musican should have respect 4 the 1's how played long then use or have mow exerperince.

I have a big problem with some of the up and coming musicians talking like they know everything and thank goodness it's not ALL! >:(  I have seen some interesting comments here on LGM on how they talk to the newer and not yet experienced musicians, young or old and they're just starting themselves.  I have always been taught to respect your elders and/or those who have more experience. Those are the ones you want to learn from and even learn how not to make the same mistakes they may have.  So with that said, no matter how much you THINK you may know, remember YOU were in the same position wanting to learn and YOU have not arrived to the point that you are the ultimate musician with ALL the answers!  Respect. learn and love!!!!!  ;)  I am STILL learning and will continue to do so (yeah Key Wiz, I want my lesson and I'm comin' up there to Michigan to get it)

that's true, but there are some of these old folks that need to know when to GIVE IT UP... And I mean no disrespect to them, but I had a fellow rejoin our church after about 15 years, who's style I couldn't get with... Now I had been playing at my church alone for at least 3 years (8 years total) before he showed up... and I got a style that me and the praise team and choir are used to... You think I'm finna sit back and let him takeover the music because he been playing since before I was born?? I had to let him know, respectfully, that we can't get with his style (He played them OLD, OLD, OLD, RUSTY chords... we done came a LONG way since then)... And that while his service to the church back then is appreciated, times have changed and there are new people at the church who waited patiently and humbly for an opportunity.

I'm a firm believer of the "get in where you fit in" philosophy... You gotta know when/where you are needed, and humbly accept the position that you are in. Just because he was there at the beginning of the church didn't give him the right to resume his position after he left for so long.... He's not a "Musician Emeritus" who can return after so many years and take control again... Our church has evolved since then, and his services are no longer required.

I feel like just because you've been playing longer, that doesn't necessarily make you a better musician... I'm constantly increasing my skills, learning every day... But I know plenty of musicians who reach a certain level (a low level at that) and never grow anymore from there... Those are the ones who need to either BRING IT UP OR GIVE IT UP!!
