I just loaded Ubuntu Linux on my church's computer. Windows XP kept having problems. We all like the interface of KDE, with it's Vista-like window decorations....actually Vista is Linux-like, since it was on Linux first.

Things we do with our computer:

1. Audio/Video recordings of the service.
2. Stream video/audio to the internet
3. Display lyrics during Praise and Worship

The best thing about it, is that it's free. Don't have to pay 400 for Vista and we didn't have to upgrade our computer.

I'm testing out Ubuntu and openSUSE for home use now. I loaded it on my children's computer today. We'll see how this goes.

Anyone else using Linux at home or in their church?

I ran Ubuntu on a church PC. Biggest problem was "Human Interface Error".

Even with Wine installed our AV guys couldn't use it. Small minds.

That's actually a good tip. If the people, who willing be using the PC the most, have NEVER even heard of Linux? You'll have issues.

The selling point for "Ubuntu" is that it's an South African word, meaning "brotherhood"...if I remember correctly. Since they're Africans, they liked that.

It's actually not that hard to use. You'd have to be a total idio...I mean computer illiterate, to not understand it.

Installing applications is even pretty easy, unless you have to compile something.

I used the default interface, with the menus at the top. It didn't take them long to get it.

Redhat? On a desktop computer?

I don't think Redhat is as user-friendly. I think it's more for enterprise users.

Well, to me the selling point was the fact that Ubuntu IS user friendly. I was REALLY impressed (& still am impressed) with how easy it is to use.

Sadly, its just not the case for the AV guys at my church...

And they call themselves techies!

Did you give them the eye candy?

It has some really good candy too.

I was going to load Super Karamba on it, to get the desktop widgets, but I think it's overkill for what we do.

They did keep asking me "where are the icons", because the desktop is so clean. Everything is on the menus.

I have Ubuntu on two of my home computers.

It is very user friendly and good for anybody trying to use something not Microsoft.

Yep. First question they asked was "Is this XP?"

Anyway, instead of going to XP we upgraded to Vista now & they still cant use it!

I know right. I told them to stay with XP but they reasoned that since Vista had come out it was better to future proof lol!

I told them they were breaking the golden "Never buy the buggy 1st version" rule plus Ubuntu was free... but they weren't having a bar of it.

Now they're paying for it... literally hah!

As the word "Ubuntu" comes from my native language, @ 1st I was confuzd bout wat dis ubuntu thing is all about.
I'm glad U explained what ubuntu is..

well, since it has 2 do with computers, i'm sure it's some entrepreneurial spirit that coined the term 4 the program & i wouldnt be surprizd if twas Mark Shuttleworth or sm1 alike.

funny thing is that i'd never heard of such program & i'm in SA!!

Ubuntu is straight up tight! The church I play for (the one I played the organ at when you cam over B3) their hard drive was completely shot...won't even load...get a blue screen everytime. So I loded Ubuntu up on a PC and was able to recover all the stuff on there and back it up.

C, what programs you using for the church?

I have a old PC here and may take that to the church and let the AV ministry have it.

If you are sick of paying for MS Office, then check out openoffice.org, it's free and works the same way.

Its free. Google will help you & their should be Linux distributors in SA who'll send you free copies on CD.

That's how I got mine.

As we stated, it's totally free. Come with an office application, OpenOffice. You can load Koffice too, but I like OpenOffice better.

We're testing out a bunch of applications, right now, until we see which ones work best.

Slides: OpenOffice Presenter
Audio: Sweep, KRecorder, Audacity
Video: Kdv (if I remember the name correctly)

We also have a hardware DVD recorder.
