New here - and in waaaay over my head!
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:38:08 AM »
Hi, I found this forum when I was searching for a particular song. I found it here, and joined so I could get more information.

I am not new to music by any means, but I was raised on classical music. I can do Bach,  :D but playing modern worship music really throws me for a loop. And improvising? Well, let's just say that is definitely a work in progress. ::)

Anyway, I originally came here to look up "Because of Who You Are," as I was singing it tonight, and wanted to learn to play it. However, the way it is posted on the forum, quite frankly, is greek to me. The first line, for example, confuses me. Is BC#D#F# in the right hand supposed to be a single chord, or a chord series? If it is a single chord, it looks like it would be quite dissonant to me.

I know that it can be quite annoying to answer questions that have been asked time and again, so if this info is somewhere else in the forum, please direct me to it. Being new to the board, I don't know my way around yet.

Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to LGM.

To answer your question, Chord structure usually looks like this:

C/CEG

The first note represents what is to be played in the left hand. The next three notes separated from the first by the slash are to be played in the right hand.

Most of the time, If the notes are separated by a comma (Ex: E, G, A), that means they are to be played separately. Otherwise, the notes are to be played together as one chord.

For future reference, these types of questions can be better answered in the "Piano/Keyboard" section of the forum.

Hope that helps.

Welcome to LGM micromouser!! I agree with SirTJ, things here at LGM are usually written in LH/RH format. You can find alot more information in the Piano/Gospel Keyboard room and you can also find alot of information in the General Music Hangout. Here is a copy of the song "Because of who you are" chorded by T-block. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. We are here to help. God bless!

This is the link that will take you to the theory room (General Music Hangout) http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,42768.0.html

Welcome to LGM micromouser!

I also was unfamiliar with the way songs were chorded here.  I was used to the standard way of having the chords placed over the words.

The example chevonee gave, ("Because of Who You Are", chorded by T-Block), is the typical way songs are chorded here at LGM.

It takes a little getting used to, but when you learn and understand it, a whole new world of music opens up at your fingertips.

If along the way, you still desire songs chorded in contemporary style, just ask and I'm sure someone will be able to help you ...

Here at this website, everyone is encouraged to learn not only to play a song, but to understand music theory
well enough to be able to chord songs, progressions, and to help others who have a desire to learn ...

                                 God bless you,   BroAllan  :)

Welcome to LGM!

One thing you'll have to get used to with Gospel is that it employs a lot more dissonant chords than Classical music, since it derives from Blues and Jazz.

Welcome to LGM.  If you got any music questions, you can feel free to ask me.  I'll do my best to help you out.

The first line, for example, confuses me. Is BC#D#F# in the right hand supposed to be a single chord, or a chord series? If it is a single chord, it looks like it would be quite dissonant to me.

The chord B-C#-D#-F# isn't dissonant at all, it's just an add9, a major chord with the added 9.  It can also be played as a 2, very pretty chord.
Real musicians play in every key!!!
Music Theory, da numbers work!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I am sorry I am so late on replying, but with the holidays, as well as some other things that came up, I really haven't had much of a chance to check in on the forum.
