Cakewalk Question?
« on: August 31, 2007, 11:32:23 AM »
Does anyone know a way in cakewalk to clean up audio from vocals (mic input)...meaning reduce noise and also increase the actual vocal volume without distorting.  I'm using it on a laptop...laptop does not have a "line in" only "mic" input...I know its not the best set up, but all I can do right now...digital recorder got destroyed.

there may be a few filters available in your version of cakewalk.  i use sonar and remember having the same dilemma.  try playing around w/ what you've got in the listing. you may not get as good of a result as you would by simply using a preamp, but it may just do the trick 4 ya.

Thanks Bruh...I upgraded to a better mic and it took care of the noise...I was just hoping I could clean up some of the tracks I did on the cheap mic...LOL, "If you know what I mean"...I think I will try out FL or Sonar in the near future, it seems like everyone is using that software and it sounds a lot easier than "Home Studio" or "Cakewalk" especially on the drum maps in which I'm terrible.

yea... use the sonitus:fx plugins that come with cakewalk, and tweak the sound with like compression, EQ, gates, etc. until you get a good sound... I know there are other plugins by Waves that do audio cleaning I think.

To boost volume without distorting, I use BBE Sonic Maximizer plugin....

I use Sonar 6 Producer Ed. for all the production work I do, and it is so much better than homestudio, which I used before I got sonar... I had Cakewalk Homestudio 2006 > Cakewalk Sonar HomeStudio 4 > Sonar 3 Prod. ed. > Sonar 6 Prod. Ed.

I recently engineered a session in Protools, and the whole time I was thinking about how much faster & better it wouldve been in Sonar lol.

Cakewalk HomeStudio 4 is on my main system, but I think I need to upgrade the soundcard on that system, so I rarely even try to use it.  I've just been using my laptop as of late with Cakewalk3...takes me forever...

Thanks for the info, its about time I did some upgrades on equip and hardware/software...I'm not getting anywhere close to the sound or rhythm tracks I'm looking for (part of it probably 'cause I'm too stubborn to read through all the help files), why I normally just post basic sample chords/piano tracks and leave it at that...lol

Now that I do all my tracking and mixing in Pro Tools, I find that I get things done more quickly than when I used Sonar for those funtions.  Sonar is still my choice for sequencing.
