I wanted to weigh in on this topic…by no means is it exhaustive ( but if you want more details, email me directly).  I absolutely advocate that musicians, and anyone else in ministry offer themselves as a holy, and acceptable gift to our Holy God…but we know for many this is not the case….but in regards of whether not someone is “anointed” or just “gifted” I thought we could all come to better understanding if we layed out exactly what all that meant…what does it mean to be anointed? I’d imagine many of us would have different interpretations…in the OT, things, prophets, priests, and kings were all anointed..It simply means a smearing, or rubbing, and it was done typically with oil as a sign of consecration to God, or to a work or service for God….Someone mentioned Romans 11:29 (….the gifts of God are without repentance) gifts in that sense is Charisma and refers to a divine grace that empowers for service…whereas the anointing mentioned in I John 2:20-27 is Chrisma and has to do more with a smearing….I imagine that many of you have received prayer and was “anointed” with oil(extra virgin..lol)..which was symbolic of the holy spirit…so in general terms most cases in scripture where you see anoint, it has to do with oil being smeared or rubbed on something or someone to designate them for assignment or purpose, and was most often performed by a human…..However, we see another type of anointing in II Corinthians chapter 1, where the anointing comes from God himself Chrio, and it is the power that was at work in Christ, and the same power that should be at work in us as believers, and his followers…so you study the scripture, pray and ask that truth be revealed to

As I close and take my seat, (key of F sharp triple flat please) let me mention that Matt chapter 7 gives an interesting account…”many will prophesy in my name, cast out devils in my name”  This sounds like many preachers, Reverend Doctors, and Apostles that are in our pulpits, and on our TV screens.  They have all the appearance of being called, anointed, and appointed,….These were being used to do tremendous works… teach the truth, they were prophesying and casting out devils???...these are the ones that we celebrate as being “anointed”…yet they bust hell wide open, and Jesus considered them workers of iniquity..because they didn’t’ have proper personal relationship to Christ, they were not connected with his will….again you check the scriptures, pray , and see where the Spirit of Truth directs you…again, if you need more clarification email me as I’m willing to share both scripture, and my personal experience in this area…PEACE

I was intrigued by this thread and decided to write even though the last post was awhile ago. To simply answer the question asked, NO there are not enough annointed musicians playing in church today! The reason for this situation falls both on musicians and the churches who hire them! I would hate to lose a church gig to a cat solely on playing level, but it happens! There are however some churches that make no room for compromise and an 'unsaved' person, even a non tither will not be employed there. There is a phrase I'm going to let the LGM family borrow and its this: its all for nought until God puts His super on your natural! The anointing comes from God, and He takes it from there. Think like this, annointed=chosen...are you chosen to play keys in the first place?

Now once we honestly get past that question then we can deal with all the rest. David said to us(Ps.33:3) to play skillfully, Paul told Timothy to study(II Tim. 2:15) and to stir up the gift...(II Tim. 1:6) so to be effective in our area of ministry that we are certain that we are "chosen" for, we must then be skillful. Don't get up on the instrument and say "alright God its all you" in place of taking/making time to grow. We are to fully commit our gifts to him meaning cover(pray over) even our practice time so that He can add the proper increase for His glory!

"The gifts and callings of the Lord are without repentance" means that it is on your life and God will not take it back(under any circumstances) but hold you accountable according to that when you are judged! Are you annointed for a task such as playing? If so do the work at and away from the instrument and watch God move out of your faithfulness!

Well said Freddy! I truly bless God for your words. Continue to stay in that uncompromising mindset. I admit I have been on a journey that tries to deter me from staying in my mode of worship to God. But I claim it everyday so that God's favor can rest upon my playing. Stay blessed.

I agree with you.  Whenever I sit down at the organ, I ask God to use me and that I may bless someone.

bingo!!!! Especially since I'm COGIC... Professor Iris Stevenson (International MOM of COGIC) set guidelines for us musicians to follow...

even then, i've had alot of older musicians that were saved, sanctified and filled with the holy ghost tell me "  If you want God to elevate you and bless you to play, U give credit to him, and U ask him to anoint U to play FOR HIM (not just for money!!)

Also It's important to try to stay away from singing and listeneing to all these worldy songs... although sumtimes we play around...lol

Are there enough Spiritual and Annointed musicians in church ? A lot of musicianns arent even saved for real. We should be playing spirits out of people. Like David. What are your thoughts.

IMO, if you're not saved you should NOT be in the music ministry!  Idc how well that person can play if they haven't accepted Christ as their personal Lord and Savior then they can not be in the ministry at any aspect!  I believe the playing spirits our of people thing comes with maturity.  Also, if you're one of those musicians whose mind tends to wander while playing then even if you are mature/mature-ish I don't think you'd be able to cast out anything from anybody cause you're focus is not on God.  But I don't really know much about casting anyway.  I know for a fact that I'm not there yet.  I think I'd be scared to see that happen right now.  However if God ever told me that he wanted me to do that I'd be for it scared or not.  I heard about David playing spirits out of people but I have not read the verses (nor do I know where they are).  Was he just playing one day and the spirit(s) just came out?  Was he playing specificly for/at a person so a spirit could come out?

See that's what I'm talking about, playing o minister.  That's why I am always hate to see all of the bashing going on about other musicians playing with or with out transpose.  Now, I do agree that you should learn your craft but for people like myself, I had to learn how to play on my own because our organist and keyboard players went to another church that paid them to play. ( I don't see anything wrong with that)  So for the service to go on I had to learn on my own picking up chords here and there from people. Although our praise team has to sing in my keys because I am limited, the Lord has blessed me in playing and our services are off the chain. I love LGM and everyone that makes it happen.  The chords have really bless my playing and our services.  And God gets the glory from every note, pointer, and encouraging word that is giving on this site.  That why all of you are so blessed.

I would say do more than try. Its important that GOD have a clean vessel to use. As the Bible say cursing and blessing can not come out of the same mouth neither can the anointing work when theres mess in the vessel. I made a choice a long time ago to live for GOD and GOD only and have seen such a difference.  The thing is people think they are missing something by not "keeping" up with the latest. Please.  Id rather know what GOD is speaking in the earth today than the latest from Keisha Cole and TI.

THATS JUST ME THOUGH!  ;D

I did this for a while too. And you know what GOD blesses a willing heart and after while you will be able to play with the best of the best. Simply because you were dedicated to the Kingdom.  I know money is a great reward and helps out in the natural but the rewards Ive gained spiritual top all of that and then some.

TRUE TRUE....

Also...

I've been unsaved for the longest. Jus because you're unsaved DOESN't mean that GOD's not gonna use you to play for him. He'll just His anointing for that and obviously you gotta gift to play. BUT I had a good friend tell me, that If you dedicate yourself to him, you'll be great. And If I were filled with the holyghost and cleansed, and possesed GOD's power within my own self, than I'll become even greater. And now I strive for that and to become the BEST I can be
