Taking Attendance
« on: February 19, 2008, 08:57:53 AM »
Does anyone else take attendance in your rehearsals? I have just started and so far I haven't heard anything negative.

What are the pros and cons of taking/tracking attendance of your choirs?

Should there be an exception to attendance taking for a choir like the senior choir?

I really wouldnt know what to say about my choir. They come when they wanna come and get up sunday and sing. So it really wouldnt matter if we took roll, cause they was gonna show up anyway when its time to sing.

but to answer the question... No, we dont take attendance.

We don't take attendance; I really don't see why you would unless you had a "no-show/ no-sing" policy.

IMO, there isn't one. Attendance speaks to accountability. If you say that you are a part of a ministry, but no one can ever find you when there's a meeting or a rehearsal, are you REALLY a part of that ministry?

Just a thought. ;)

If you have authority to establish rules and the authority to discipline choir members, then you have to do what is needs to be done.

Just curious, are you going to take attendance for the senior choir and will you have any repercussions?

We take attendence at every choir rehearsal.  You have to attend at least 2 rehearsals a month in order to sing the first Sunday of the following month.

but thats just the problem, rules are put in place but they only last for 2weeks and after that, everyone forgets that there was even a rule set. We had that rule "no show-no sing" but that lasted a month and that was out the window. Now they wanna apply that to us (musicians) when its only two of us.  ?/?

You can't just establish rules and not enforce them. At the rate that you are going, what kind of position will your music department be in a year from now? Believe it or not, people want order; they want rules and they want to be held accountable for them.
I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IF YOU ESTABLISH AND ENFORCE THE RULES YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY ATTENDANCE PROBLEMS!!!

The choir I direct, we still take an attendance, , it shows whose, dedicated, organization, and also as stated before your must attend 2 rehearsals in order to sing on Sunday Morning.  Choir members have to understand that singing is a ministry and within every ministry you have to be decent and in order.  Practice is always necessary and we want Him to perfect that which concerns us.  so  Showing up to rehearsal means that you are concerned about Him and also lives of those whom may become saved through the ministry. So God is able to come and perfect us.  Practice makes perfect.  Choir members need to recognize if they are on the choir for ministry or out of formality.

I was having an attendance issue no too long ago; It partly may have been my fault. I don't know if your choir/ PT ever been stuck in a rut - singing the same old songs; well, we were. We kept trying to perfect the songs we couldn't get "just right".
So, I began to drop those songs that just wasn't cuttin' it and began learning knew songs and I noticed more consistency in attendance. And now I'm trying to constantly keep new songs in rotation.

Well I talked to my pastor regarding this issue because I had started to hear some negative ramblings and he said that he felt like taking attendance at rehearsal was leading down too much to the road of "micromanagement." Give me your reactions.

At the end of the day, it's the Pastor's vision that you, as the MOM, must follow. The best you can do is to show him the "fruit" of taking attendance vs not taking attendance (if there, indeed, is a difference in the execution of the music ministry).

See what happens over the next 2-3 months, then revisit with the pastor and share your findings/concerns.

Remember also, that people are people; they may not have the same zeal for the music ministry as you do. If that begins to bother you TOO much, then ask God what He would have you to do.

Be Blessed.

I understand that at the end of the day the pastor's vision is all that matters, but I was asking YOUR opinion about if you thought that taking attendance at choir rehearsal was leading down the road of micromanagement.
