DW that Axe is hot, But I still got to roll with the "F"Bass you really got to get over to your local Pro-shop and fire this Axe up. If you get out to NJ head over to Edison NJ and drop in on Jay the owner of NJ Bass & Guitar Center off of Amboy Ave tell him Al Smith sent you then fire up one of his "F" Basses you will understand what I'm talking about after that.

F-Basses are quite the lookers.  I haven't played one, but they've often been described as a jazz bass on steroids.  The one common complaint is that the nitro-somethingorother finish that George uses tends to fade pretty fast.

Point well taken, but you assumed I was going to purchase a new not so my friend.
I have seen some used ones for around $1800, you get what you pay for your not going to get that Fodera sound out of a First Act.

well something would be quite wrong with me if i expected to get some sort of professional sound out of something with an 8-year-old on the box (no offense to 8-year-olds). LOL.

Hey, you never know. With the current state of CNC and technology advances in mass guitar building, a pretty decent instrument can be had pretty cheaply these days (see the new Squiers). I just can't justify spending more than $1500 on a bass. and those basses costing $3k, $4k, $5k and up is just insane. That's a down payment on a house or car. Something of long term value. But hey, if the lord has blessed you and wants you to have it, it will be yours!

Dang DW, where do you live.... 5k on a house down payment... I need to move up there...  :-\ ..LOL

I feel you on the Current state of technology... a even at $1500 I can't justify it, unless its being given to me... Anybody got a $1500+ dollar bass they want to sew into my ministry?  ;D

i hear you torch. here in NY 5K is a down payment on your down payment. LOL.

i see it like this, if you makin money playin and you feel you need that, more power to you, its an investment (even better if you have a full time job + your getting paid to play). its no different than a tech company investing in high quality servers or a small publishing company buying top of the line printers. just make sure you're making enough to cover those expenses. If you're like me and playing at your home church because you really want to play, then equipment purchases are coming out of your own personal funds and i suggest you be more budget conscious, especially if you have a family. any money i get for playing (love offerings) i put to an "equipment fund" (if i dont need it for pocket money. LOL) and save up to buy new gear. also i like shopping at GC because i have a GC card and can pay over time (i have good credit card sense so i know how not to go overboard). Regardless of my skill level, for me to pay 3k, 4K, or 5k for a bass when i still have student loans to pay back is just retarded. we are to be good stewards over our money (even if its for stuff we do for the Lord)
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

Ha! Southeast Virginia. It depends on the type of loan and if you are a first time home buyer and depending on the price of the home. Some loan programs require a minimum of 3% down and some zero%. I put down $3k! Granted my house is small (Ranch, 1400sq.ft.).

Back on subject. As I said, if one has been blessed to be able afford an expensive boutique bass, then by all means get what makes you happy. And praise him!

When I started playing 3 years ago, I wasn't sure if I was going to stick with it.  I spent $270 for everything:  Silvertone bass (that someone had installed EMG's in), 10 watt practice amp, cable, bag, nylon strap.  I sold the bass, strap, and bag for $200 last year.

Five months after I started playing I scored a Fender Bassman 100 off eBay for around $280. Not the new smaller, lighter tiltback style. I am still playing at church through that amp.

A little over a year after I started playing I bought a 5-string Jazz from Rondo Music for $150 shipped to my door.  I play that bass every Sunday at church.

Last year I bought a Fender fretless Jazz for $325 from a local store and a Crate BX-50 combo amp for $80 off eBay.  I still have both.

Where am I going with all of this?  Like floaded said, if you have a family or if your playing needs are modest, then by all means let your equipment reflect that. My wife loves me dearly and she supports my playing 110% but if I came home with a $2,000 bass she would not be happy with me.  It's very unlikely that I will ever spend that much a bass, or even half that much on a bass, but I am OK with that.  The same goes for my amp.

OK sounds like a topic for another thread, but as we prosper and if it be the will of our Father God and you can afford it why not. I have no problem spending that much on a Bass. When I first saved up enough money to order my Ken Smith WBT 5 Elite a few years ago the asking price to have it made was $3400 and I must say it was a great investment. If your serious and its not a hobby with you as the brother previously eluded to, your investing in you. If its just something you do on Sunday then I relate to what your saying totally.

I totally agree. Unfortunately for me, bass isn't the only instrument that I love to play. I absolutely love a B3, and would have one if I could get one. I'm still looking for a steal on a Yamaha Motif.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!
