i know their styles are more rock-oriented, and I don't say this because they are on my list, but if you want to hear flawless technique and impeccable taste, phrasing and elody....you guys need to check out dan huff and andy timmons. i've never heard either guy put flash above substance, and they both have amazing feel and note selection.

I'd never heard of Timmons til last year when he released his new album (there was a Guitar Player interview, I think). The guy is GREAT, and has amazing tone.

I still haven't dug into a lot of his stuff, but what I heard was great.

OK, everyone, incorporate this stuff into your playing IMMEDIATELY!

And, you know, that little drum beat at the end could very well be a mid-tempo gospel beat... think about it.

I've been a fan of Dann Huff since the late '80s when he fronted the band Giant. He then went on to play with Clint Black for a couple years as well as a ton of popular CCM artists with some of his coolest stuff being with dc talk.
Dann's also one of the alumni from one of Christian rock's earliest offerings, Whiteheart. From Whiteheart come Dann, Gordon Kennedy, Tommy Sims and a host of other Nashville-based mega-talented musicians (Chris McHugh on drums being another).

Andy I saw live at NAMM back in 2002 or 2003. He's a killer player who always seems to fly under the radar and gets missed by a lot of players looking for tasteful influences.

yeah...he's one of the top producers in Nashville right now. pretty much any great solo on any top 40 song in the last 15 years or so is more than likely to be Dann Huff. He's amazing....it's a shame more people don't know him by name.

WAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT a minute! No one's brought up Setzer lol.

You know how well this stuff fits into a gospel setting? Like butter...

And I need that guitar...

This has always been one of my favorite songs, and he does a great take on it. I've loved that number ever since I saw La Bamba as a kid (the movie).

I didn't. He's neither a favorite nor an influence of mine or at least not directly. In fact, other than what was played on the radio, I didn't listen to his stuff at all until just a few years ago. When I finally did, I heard some pretty good guitar playing, like in this clip here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le96rVfFkqY

This was ALWAYS my favorite part of "Jimi at Woodstock."  It seems like he suddenly goes to his "bedroom playing."  Like, when I'm in my room I can do almost anything.  Things just flowwww....

He has greater guitar skills of some in my top ten, but not a top ten favorite for me.  Sorry.

No big thing, I think I was more surprised that I forgot about him. Setzer's one of those dudes that I will totally dig on for months, then he slips away into my CD collection for about a year lol.

Not sure why... maybe I can only handle so much rockabilly/swing...

Seriously, though, a lot of those rockabilly licks fit into old school gospel amazingly--I saw this one guy nailing stuff like that at this revival that was being held in a gym. He was crankin' out loud, raunchy (and naturally echo-y) rockabilly licks on a Tele through a Fender 4x10 (I'm guessing Deville ???). Right at that moment it "clicked," and I was like "hey, I need to work on that..."

Never did, though... lol. So, about a year and a half later, the Setzer pops out again...  :D
