Personally, i'd rather play on at least one tom with some kind of sound, than to play on 3 toms that sound the same with towels taped to them with them all sounding like your are hitting on a mattress.

I'm guessing alot of the beginner drummers don't know that new heads could help out the sound of drums alot and could make even the worst kits sound decent. So if your heads are all beat up, don't cover it up with a cut-up towel, change the heads!

This topic reminded me to ask about the purpose of tape under cymbals? it mite be obvious but just wanna be sure  ;D
watch a few clips and seen sum of the drummers with tape under their cymbals.

I just put about 1 and a half inch of duct tape on my snare batter Coated Emperor but under the head so its not visible.....not on my toms though...or cymbals...lol......I once went to a church and one of the cymbals was full of duct tape under the cymbal...I was like what the heck...it sounded sooo wack...lol....

It cuts high freqs a bit and reduces some volume.

Yeah sometimes you may have to put an inch of tape or something to help out with sound. But I'm talking about the cats who put a whole bunch of tape all on the tom, like this one I saw on this website...

That is the short and long of it tho.  If cats knew how to tune their drums and select the heads to achieve the sound that they are looking for you wouldn't have that issue.

And there " Scape Goat ?/?" Is too Buy Pinstripes and still cover there kits with all kind of tape. I have a set of Pinstripes on my kit now, BUT Im and OK tuner. Some cat came and played my kit and Brought his Own Tape. I was like what the HECK!.  :( >:( :D.

LOL I use put Ductape on my set (like 6 layers on each tom) ;D ;D ....then after I start playin it more and more, it began to sound more and more wack :-\

....So I copped a pack of Evans E-rings and that took care of the unwanted overtones
