Left or right hand?
« on: January 07, 2005, 09:55:58 AM »
Should Chords primarily be played with the Right or left hand? Or does it depend on the type of chords being played.

Will,

If you are not soloing, then I believe you can play chords with either hand, as you accompany the choir, or soloist.  But you should probably view both hands together as one chord, in terms of the harmony.

I am not an expert, but I believe it's called "comping" when you do this, although that may be a jazz term.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable can expand on what I've said.

HTH,
God bless,
Eggs

first of all it depends on who you are playing with like a bass player you can play chords mainly with your left hand around a octave below and above middle c and extra chords or little tricks with your right hand. If your playing alone you can voice your left hand so you can play bass and a chord in the same hand only if your hand is big enough :) or just use less notes for example some players can stretch and octave or more comfortablely in one hand and some cant, a c major chord is C E G you can play it open it can be played C G E the C covers the bass and the G and E is the left hand chord now your right hand is free to add color and have fun

This a wide open question and the short answer will probably end up being whatever you feel is neccessary to achieve your intended voicing while maintaining the basic structure of a song that you are performing.

If you are playing by yourself, a good rule of thumb is to play the root and the melody. Most advance musicians chord with both hands. Its not neccessary but it does give a musician more options of creativity.

As mentioned earlier, you want to identify what is needed in your performance environment. A bass player and sax could eliminate the need for you to play root or melody.

You shouldn't think of chords as left Hand/right Hand.  Think of them as a unit.
