Do You Think As A Drummer, You Could Still....
« on: May 18, 2008, 02:56:50 AM »
As a drummer, do you think you could still hold it down with just a: kick, snare, one tom, one ride cymbal, and one crash cymbal?

Or do you need the double kick and his entire family to make you feel secure to get the job done? 8)

There are times when I just don't want to bring all the stuff that we drummers tent to have. I have a big set, but I rarely use the whole set at one time.

I have rock the spot for near two hours with a pair of wire brushes, a pair of nylon rods/rutes, a pair of Johnny Rabb Rhythm Saw sticks and my stick bag a picnic table and a tin can... seriously playing outside a club backing a singer/song writer cat on acoustic guitar doing everything from Motown to Bob Marley to Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

I also rocked a house party full of hip-hop freestylers with my car keys and a bottle.

BTW--I am a percussionist that plays drum set or primarily NOT A DRUMMER. The difference is playing/making music not beats/beating on things. * Not bashing anyone... I really like the topic so please guys do not get offended by the previous statement. *

Try not to become a person of success but rather a person of VALUE. - T. Harv Eker

Hahaha! Good to see you let loose now & again Sabe. ;D

I'll see your car keys & a bottle and raise you a 44gallon drum with matching tree branch used at an open air Classical concert. I played that thing for 7 hours straight*!

*Actual event may/may not have happened in reality or my dreams. Results were varied.

Aww man, one time i was playin a gig, and forgot my drumset. It just slipped my mind. I guess i was thinking about food again...but anyway...

I was in a panic, and i had to think quick! Then i looked in the garbage and seen two smashed pop cans. I HAD to do something. So i grabbed the cans and did the gig, and afterwards, everybody kept asking me "how do you get that funky sound?", and i told 'em: "...you just have to have a Can do attitude!" 8)

 What?...you do believe me!

On the conga, I use my left hand if I am using just one.  I play the backbeat with a slap and the traditional open tones depending on what rhythm I am playing.  There is video of my setup out there, but I don't think there is while I am playing the congas.....at least not yet.  There if definitely audio on the myspace page of the guy I gig with.  I'll change my avatar to better show how it looks too.

snare, hats, base, one tom, and a crash, is what I use almost everytime I play out. And even when I'm home I don't use 3 toms. As you get better, you realize that you can get creative with only a few pieces.
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
