Cool thread!!!!!!!!
Ok, I get to practice at least 5-6 times a week, which is great. Not always what I want to practice, but I get to practice with my students which is great. For instance a couple of my students are working on real basic fundamentals (reading), ALL are working on Technique, some are working on chart reading, others are working out of Gary Chester's New Breed, some are working on Pat Petrillo's book so even though they all are working on different things, I benefit from it too because I get to work on Fundamentals ALL THE TIME!!! Which is great for me cause I also work on coordination and I add stuff so I don't get bored LOL....
During my time, I'm working on Gary Chaffee's books Patterns. Really great info. However, I don't recommend it for the beginner. There's ALOT of stuff there that you need to be guided with a really good teacher to understand it. But if you're bold, good luck LOL!! I also LISTEN ALOT!!!!!!!!! Try to listen to authentic stuff. Get away from the Pop stuff every once in a while. That's already in our culture. Go out of your norm. Listen to Cumbia, Malambo, etc. Stuff that you're not use to hearing. Baio, Samba (real Brazilian stuff not those fake patterns that people teach LOL), Afro Cuban....remember that these styles have NOTHING to do with Patterns!!!!!! They all come from a clave and understanding how to weave in and out of the clave is the most important thing!!!!!!! That's when music starts sounding "elastic." Ok, I'm done. Also, if you get a chance check out, Phil Maturano's books. Really nice stuff. Take care and God Bless.

p.s. make sure you practice consistently, and focused practice!!! It's not how long you practice, but focused practice. TURN THE CELL PHONE OFF!!!! LOL!!
