Simple Progressions for Fast Church Beat Songs....
« on: June 09, 2008, 10:59:07 AM »
Is there a simple progression similar to knowing the 1-4-5 in songs like...."What a Mighty God We Serve," "Victory is Mine," etc? Or are those songs mainly bass driven where I can just use simple and clean chords?

Well they ARE bass driven. Although you can use your LH to play bass runs while your right hand plays the chords.

How you do that, i have no clue. I am trying to do it myself.

Well if you have a bassist in church, why bother? if you don't then i do suggest you learn the bass runs in the LH.

yes, because one day, you'll be without a bassist.

I take that back. It happened to me last week Friday. I was nearly crying on the keys. My P&W leader said i looked like the world had come crashing down on me.  :D

The problem is that the way we have arranged our songs, the bass is such an intricate part that if it is not there you can definitely tell that something is missing.

YOU can. The musically deficient within the congregation can't.  ;) 8)

 :D :D :D :D :D

That is true. I have also started doing the sliding my hands over the keys when i get stuck thing. They look at me like  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o SICK!!!!!!!

On a side note, a lot of the congregation have no idea who the instrumentalists are. In fact some girl told me she just (in paraphrase) "...hears some sounds coming out from behind the choir."

There are a few simple ones:  2-5-1, 7-3-6, 3-6-2, 6-2-5-1, 3-6-2-5-1, 5-1-4, 1-4

And yes, those songs are mostly bass driven with simple chords and various runs to accompany it.  Heck, if u have at least a bass player or can run the bass line, u can get by with just that and the song will be banging.  Trust me, I've done it before, LOL.

yes, because one day, you'll be without a bassist.

Please believe it!!!  IMO, the first thing u should do is learn to play w/out a bass player.  Then, learn to play w/ a bass player, that way u ready for either situation.

I've played without a bass player for entire life......what have I been missing?
It's a concept I teach on my course, I have a DVD lesson covering " Can't Nobody Do Me Like Jesus and Victory Is Mine" . I teach the left hand bass right hand chord technique.
I love music, any kind of music.

Two suggestions, if I may SOJ:

a. go slower. Sometimes, you get so excited that you go at YOUR rate of expertise leaving us novices in the dust.

b. stick to the song. This goes along with 'a'. You'll show a progression or the L.H. / R.H. then take off runnin'.  :D :D

Thanks for hearing me out.  :)

T-Block has some excellent bass runs in his lessons somewhere in prior posts.  I play them often.  It was so long ago I have no idea where.  Try a search for bass runs.  I think one run is Eb, back down to G, Ab A, Bb, C, Db, or(C#) D, Eb. Victory is Mine and other songs can be played over that run.  (partially)
Eb, D, Eb,E,F, G Ab, A, Bb twice F twice Bb B, C, back Gb
Over the line, Victory today is mine. Then, F, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, Gb twice. I told satan, get thee behind.   G, Ab, A, Bb, Eb.  Victory today is mine.

A 1, 3, 5, 7-8 played rhythmically is a good simple bass run.  Or a I, 8, 7, 8.
Actually, most of the time I don't know what I am really playing with my left hand.  I will sometimes consciously make note so that I don't repeat too much. Hope that helps

Guys,

Being from the country, the only two instruments that are played in just ablut every church is the pian/keyboard and the drums. I play the keyboard and when I play I always incorporate the bass. Many people say that they like my style and that it sounds like a bass guitar is there, but it is me. I also play with a church, in which all I do is play the bass parts, while the music leader chords with both hands. With congreagational songs, the bass is what drives a great deal of those songs, and to be honest those bass lines are simple. I am a bass man myself anyway, and without it I can tell a big difference, except in songs where not a lot of bass is needed, like in Total Praise, or Center of My Joy. Everybody be Blessed, and always pray before you play.
