Twin Reverb vs. Valveking 212
« on: June 18, 2008, 08:53:59 AM »
I know.. I know.. I know what you're thinking BUT......

Dollar wise, is the Valveking 212 the closest I can get to the Twin in sound for half the price?

Or are there any other suggestions under the $600 mark.

a crate palomino or v30 all tube class a amp will smoke the valveking....it's just a great tube amp for about 500 bucks new. don't be fooled by the crate name...they got it right with that amp.

Did they stop selling the "crate palomino v32"? I only seen it on ebay used.

I really liked my buddy's Valveking 212, but, man, that Crate is ZZ Top-in-a-box...

I was shocked when I played one.

Oh yeah... it has a clean channel, too...

Used Twin . . . a Deluxe Reverb . . . a lot of guys like the Jazz Chorus instead of the Twin . . . or just save up for a Twin.  What I spend on half price amps trying to get something that sounds "close" I could have got two Twins!

The Jazz chorus is nice.. but I don't think it has the "warmth" I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a bIg WaRm cLeAn sound!  ;D ...... for cheap. lol  ?/?

Used Twin Reverb.  Used Deluxe Reverb :)

Jazz Chorus is too sterile for me too, but I've used it on plenty of sessions.

I've also used a Peavey Classic 50 (or 30, I dont remember, but it was 2x12) on a session and it sounded basically like a Jazz Chorus.  My personal session amp is a Yamaha 410 they dont make any more :)

I just read up . . . you can get a used Twin Reissue for $600 if you hunt, and a used Deluxe Reverb Reissue for under $600 easy.  Problem solved.

Save your money or build a personal relationship with your local music store, and set up a payment plan. The Twin is the "Best". When I began to research amps. I went to live concerts to see what the "Big Boys" were playing and the majority were playing Twins, and some were even playing in stereo with two Twins. That's my next level. The Twin Reverb Reissued is considered to be the best clean tube amp at a good price. It's a heavy amp, but if your travel, and the church your playing at does have a sound system. 85 watts of power will still reach out and touch somebody. I have several amps Peavey Classic 50, Hughes / Kettner Duotone, Crate, Berhinger, and I love my Twin. Be Blessed, The Wrightman

if you have to have the "Twin" sound....then go for it. For some players that's the be all end all. Not me, doesn't really inspire me that much. Of Fender amps, I'd much rather have a Bassman. I prefer british voiced amps for the most part. It all just comes down to preference. If you have to have that sound...i'd make it happen somehow.

i did see dubose playing a peavey once on a video, lol. i still stand by the "tone is in the fingers mantra". most guys you see playing something play it because that's what everyone thinks you are supposed to play for that genre. most people think of metal when they think of Mesa....but Mesa has one of the best tube clean sounds you'll ever hear. amazing verb too. doesn't hurt to think out of the box sometimes.

Thanx guys.

Now can someone explain the whole big deal of having 2 12's over 1 12?

If I am correct, the deluxe reverb has 112. What are the major differences between the 2?

Most guys playing contemporary gospel are looking for the Twin sound, or similar.  That having been said:

Yes Dubose plays Peavey, I believe a very specific model Peavey that is no longer made (I may be remembering incorrectly).  There are a lot of hard to find "treasures" in the amp world, as well as certain musicians know how to make anything sound good.

More sound . . . somehow the sound has more "life".  I cant explain it.  You would have to compare two amps next two each other.  But for recording it doesnt matter as you usually only mic one speaker.

For a Reissue?  That's a very good deal, but not a steal.  $600 or less is a steal.

Good, honest "opinion" article about the Fender Twin Reverb.

this original post was pretty timely cuz i've been lookin at a Twin. Went to try it out at with the owner yesterday and I'm really impressed. Gonna do some swappin and payin and it'll be in my possession Friday.

On a side note, the article has a mini definition of tone that I like, agrees with a lot of what's said on this forum...

Tone. That one word evokes a plethora of images from every guitarist, with no two responding alike. It is that elusive and much sought after, and certainly ever-changing phenomena that really boils down to feeling. Yes, a feeling that your notes played are coming across in a preconceived fulfilling display of aural splendor to your audience, but most of all you, the player. The acquisition of good tone really boils down to the player and his hands, his attack and his ability to use playing dynamics.
