Am i trippin' or is this the truth?
« on: July 23, 2008, 11:11:55 PM »
I have a problem with ppl in the church tellin' members that have been playing or singing for a long time that they have done a good job everytime they perform, but when in actuality, they are not so good.  Ive been playin' drums for 5 years now but have only been practicing seriously for a about a year and a few months now.  I know most of you seen my old clip on that marching site and that was the outcome of ppl givin' me a pat on the back and a job well done when i wasnt so good and ppl either lied to me in my face or didnt have a musical ear.

What do you all think about this?  I just wish church folk would be a little more real with the people that have been playing for a while to know right from wrong, and to know a little about music .  Now i know, lol, that everyone on here has once had or will have an experience of playing with a musician of a different instrument thats been playing for a long time and plays obnoxiously too loud or just makes a bunch of noise(not fitting the musical context). Im nowhere near being a great musician and im working on it, but dang..... Second question: How would you handle these types of situations? Would be real and straight up, or grit your teeth and bear it?

Since you asked...I'd say YOU'RE TRIPPIN.

Bro, their are things we can discuss that can realistically be changed or improved, but this topic isn't one of them. You shouldn't be such a feen for affirmation. You know when suck....

I'm only ever real with people. In real life & on the interwebs.

And that marching vid was terrible. I remember it because I can't erase it from memory. ;D

Anyone who halfway knows what they're talking about, and has some helpful suggestions, should be able to do so, if they do it in a legitimate & helpful way.

I would think most people would welcome good knowledge with that kind of spirit, and take it into consideration. 8)

Church folk first  to come to grips with:

-self accountability
-showing themselves approved
-examining themselves
-understanding that honest critique is not hostile judgement
-the truth often is uncomfortable because the truth is chastisement

Biblical backing for the question/issue you ask of;
- Proverbs 28:23 - He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.

Fits in the same category as in the last days people wanting their ears tickled. However, the situations you speak of also point to the lack of understanding that most church folk have in our community especially on TRUE EXCELLENCE, and TRUE MENTORSHIP & FRIENDSHIP. Faithful are wounds of a friend goes deeper than folk want accept & live by. Raising up a standard in ones own life is the ultimate challenge.

How do you deal with the situation? You seek TRUE WISDOM. TRUE MENTORSHIP in the area of question. When you are ready to become an Elisha then your Elijah will appear. It may put you in an Abram/Abraham position of having to leave your kindred because their version of excellence and your path/purpose of excellence are not the same.

You are not buggin'/trippin'... we have to be mindful that our chastisement, nor our approval can come through ourselves. It comes through those assigned to us or appointed/anointed to do so. It will come through another man (vessel to this earth realm) which will confirm your spiritual preparation/approval.
Try not to become a person of success but rather a person of VALUE. - T. Harv Eker

well brah maybe they gave you the pat on the back to encourage you keep working at it.....

I will never tell a cat that he sucks....I would tell him to keep practicing and keep his head up...and if thier's anything I can do to help I would....

there is a way to do things and a way to say things without being brash or rude...

Pfft... I'd rather tell the truth rather than worry about how a person should be told they suck... No doubt I'd have advice for them but I'll still tell them they suck first.

Gotta be careful when dealing w/people...encourage their efforts, but don't insincerely compliment.
I try to find something good to comment on. If not, I try to keep my mouth SHUT.
IMO, the place for 'constructive criticism' is during practice, not after the song is over.
Sometimes I give suggestions for future performances...
