Vibrato and Chorus question
« on: September 11, 2004, 02:55:37 AM »
I noticed on our organ the other day that the vibrato and chorus don't sound right. The vibrato more or less sounds like a cluck cluck cluck cluck sound (if you can understand what i mean by that, lol) and the chorus sounds like there is no bass at all so the sound is real thin and just sounds plain bad. I barely use either of these effects but I was just curious as to why they sound like that because I know that can't be right...

If you are refering to your vibrato great and vibrato swell switches, you may be having a problem with the scanner in the organ.  I had that problem with my A-102 and I had the scanner rebuilt and it works wonderfully.  However, if you are experiencing problems with your chorus and vibrato knob, I'm not sure what that is.

what happens is over the years the vibrato scanner grows crystaline in it which causes the scanner to rub against. You could probably try cleaning the inside of the scanner if you know to work with electronic's. But if not you can have someone clean or replace parts on it. That will correct the problem.

What about the chorus sounding thin?

Wil, did you read my 2 questions I asked a few days ago. One was in the "Something interesting about the leslies bass rotor" thread and the other is the last post in the "2 questions about the leslie". I don't know if you read them or not since I never heard back from you. But I thought maybe you'd know something about that since you seem to be quite knowledge on Hammond's and Leslie's

Vibrato and Chorus question

It could be many reasons. Somestimes the motors have to be adjusted when they go into stop to fast. In some cases the belts are either to tight or too loose. But using the stop position. Once the drum stops its heavy. So it takes it a little time to speed up to fast position versus from slow to fast the drum is already spinning. So that makes it easy for it to catch up to speed in the fast position. Hope I answered your question.

What's involved in cleaning the scanner? I may open'er up and try to clean it if its not too difficult. I mean the worst that could happen is the chorus/vibrato wouldn't work at all, lol. Which really isn't a big deal anyway because no one that plays the organ here uses it. However, I would like to use it because I like the chorus sound (when its working right). So if someone could explain how this procedure is done I'd appreciate it.

Hi RMS2003,
There are instructions on how to service the scanner on the Hammond Wiki website. Type this into your browser and it'll take you there
 http://www.dairiki.org/HammondWiki/HowToRebuildTheVibratoScanner
The Hammond Wiki website is full of all kinds of usefull Hammond info.
Also, I see for sale from time to time on eBay, instructions on scanner repair for $3 - on eBay, just type 'Vibrato Scanner Repair' into the 'search' field.
Hope this info helps ya.

I was able to get some help on that elsewhere. However the process is quite involved and not something I'm going to attempt myself for fear that I may really screw something up during the disassembly process. And it'll be my butt if I should do something wrong  :? How much would it cost for a tech to come out and do it for me?
