Keyboard Question
« on: November 03, 2004, 01:10:43 PM »
I'm glad you guys opened this room. My question is, is learning the piano the same as learning the keyboard? I mean if you get learn one have you learned the other one? I've learned neither one because it seems pretty complicated to me. I play bass guitar and drums a little, but my brother owns a keyboard and I'm trying to help him learn how to play the keyboard. I know how to form all the major scales and minor scales, I know the formulas to forming all the chords, I even know what you guys mean by a 2-5-1 progression, the thing is though when I apply this knowledge to the keyboard it sounds nothing like gospel to me. It more like playing a whole bunch of chords. They sound nothing like songs to me. I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or what, but I need some help bad. I want so badly for my brother or I to learn how to play keyboard so that or gospel group can have the musicians that we need and not have to rely on other people to play for us. Can anyone in here help me? I know that someone has been through this before.

Keyboard Question

I guess the answer to your question is yes and then again, no.

Yes in that if you have learned the piano, you have also learned the keyboard as far as chords, progressions and theory. The two are the same in that respect. THe sustain pedal also has the same function on the keyboard and piano.

The answer is no in that some keyboards have 61 keys, 76 keys, and 88 keys . . . and other combinations. Keyboards have different voices that must be mastered . . . electric piano, piano 1, 2 and 3, guitar voices, etc. Some keyboards have rhythm. Some have internal speakers, some must have an amp. WIth keyboards you should know MIDI use, programming from a PC, a bit of technology. And of course, keyboards are great because they are portable whereas pianos aren't. However, it is great to have the wieghted piano keys, and weighted keyboards are a tad more expensive.

So I would say both have advantages and disadvantages. Some keyboards sound as good as any organ, and they are portable . . . . so a keyboard may be a good investment, even if you do have access to a piano.
