Drum injuries..share your injuries
« on: September 22, 2008, 09:03:00 PM »
On Sunday when the Holy Ghost filled the place, people broke out in a holy dance..I was playing so long that when I looked at my hands I had a few cuts on them (played with my sticks in between my fingers and some skin came off from my hands....painful).  Share your drum injuries. Stay blessed, Nate J.

Have u ever experienced cramps in your forearms that makes you fingers cramp into a fist, or your arm and hand get that tingling felling like its going to sleep.  I just palyed 10 min ago at college minisrty and all of that hit me like a brick.   However, i know i got a history of cramps so before a gig i drink 2 bottles of gatorade and during.

You need to drink more water and start taking potassium suppliments. gatorade it a band-aid fix for what is a more serious issue.

I don't remember sustaining any injuries but I have injured others. I once let a stick slip out of my hand and hit the organist in the forehead and he fell off the organ. ;D

Yeah I've caught them on a few different occasions on the back of my thigh (Sitting Too Low) I watched the Dave Weckl DVD and saw the segment about posture on the kit.

One Sunday we were good into service, I mean the spirit was moving man and I was just going to town and my fiance had bought me a "Roc and Soc" thone with the raised "Man Part" for comfort I guess. So I'm giving praise with my hands and I started my "hopping lick" you know where you bounce more than you should and when gravity kicked in and I came down, I came back to "earth" on the wrong part of the seat and made "wine" out of my man grapes. Painful. I had to hand the sticks over to the apprentice until I could stop crying.

Well not crying for real, but a 300 lbs man landing on "himself" is not a good feeling. Oh and I've pinched and trapped fingers in the tripods of the snare and cymbals stand countless times. Does that count?

Definitely have experienced this.  I remeber about 4 years ago I did a New Years gig, and I had to set up by a huge picture window and I could feel the cold coming through.  And mind you this place was right across the street from the Ohio River so you know it was cold.  Anyway, I did the gig and after about 4 hours we got to the end of the set, and my body just locked up.

Between sweating, and the cold, it was not good.  I honestly couldn't finish.  Good thing we were pretty much done.  The crowd was demanding an encore.  I just couldn't do it.  Fortunately, the bass player could play drums, and the guitarist switched to the bass.  After the gig was over, the bandleader came by the window and when I explained to him about the cold and he could feel it for himself, he understood.  On top of that, I had to drive us back because no one else could stay up.

When I finally got home and got my gear in the house, I finally got into the bed and got some rest.  The next afternoon, I finally got up and I could barely move.  Once I got another hot shower, I finally got myself right.

I've also had the occasional cramp in the thigh, blisters on my fingers and hands, and I've even hit myself in the eye with a stick.

The sacrifices we make for the art.
When you've done your very best, do even better.
