I wouldnt. It doesent even have sliders, which is very important for organ sounds and layering, which are essential to the gospel musician

Not true at all.....a  "real" (as some people would put it) gospel musician does not play keyboard organ......ever (NOTE: Not saying that i havent seen it done, but its not as popular as some people make it sound).  You should know how to play a whole service on a keyboard.  Churchy, worshippy, urban, it all.  Layering yes, as you can get a FAT sound if you know what you doin, but organ??? Thats a no-no lol

Yo, my mother loves the Organ, so whenever we travelled to a church without an Organ and she was going to sing she'd ask me to use the organ voice on my MO8.

I'd always tell her "Ma.  It's NOT THE SAME!"  >:(

There are exceptions though.  I've heard the KB3 mode on the Kurzweil PC3 and it's pretty awesome.  The Nord Electro 2 can also sound pretty sweet.  If you have one of those and pair it with Midi Base Pedals and an Expression Pedal most people wouldn't know the difference.

That's if you're travelling to another church that does NOT have an Organ though.  We have an A100 and I wouldn't DARE play an Organ voice on a keyboard with an A100 sitting there.   :-\

Thank you. Even though that wasn't my reason for disagreeing.

I'm just sayin....

I could say that the sky is blue, and He will post a picture of a little man saying 'NO'!

For the kicks and giggles of it all:

The sky IS blue; therefore, there'd be no reason for me to disagree.

However, since your use of logic in many a thread is as rare as the Detroit Lions winning the Super Bowl, we wind up on opposite sides of the fence.  :-\

Back to topic; Your use of the word, 'essential' was unwarranted, unfounded and unnecessary putting it right up there with your opinion.

It ends, here.

Thats your opinion, I respect it, but disagree. If you are in a situation where there is no organ, I see nothing wrong with playing  organ on a keyboard. Most people wont know the difference or even care, unless they are a musician. A good musician can make anything sound good.

Thats my point, most people dont really care if its a real organ or not. Of course I'd prefer to use a hammond, but When I had to choose between playing pipe organ and using the Motif ES organ, I chose the Motif, and the people loved it.

I know what you mean, U13. I don't have sliders on either of my boards, but when I went to a guest church and had a chance to tinker with the sliders on their board...it was like heaven. I finally got a chance to see how these cats be switching from a Rhodes sound to that nasty synth within seconds of a song.

Ya boy GOTS to get one.

Yeah,  the sliders make it easy to have horns and piano in the right hand, and bass in the left, its a lot easier when you can do it on the fly

I have seen it done once but there was a whole band supporting the keyboard player. If the keyboard player is by themselves, it sounds cheesy. ( Im not saying it cant be done.)

When rickey smiley was doing comicvieiw, his band was using the motif es, and the organ sounded very real when mixed with the other instruments

I play the Organ primarily.  So when I hear someone on a keyboard playing an Organ voice It's like...What in God's name are you doing?   :-\

But then again a Sax player would probably say the same thing if the guy on the keyboard played a Sax voice.  Because he knows the sound of the instrument.

BUT.

MOST people can't really tell and don't really CARE.  My wife and I visited a church on Friday and we were in the Balcony.  We couldn't see the musicians.  They started playing and my wife looked at me and said "They have an Organ".  I said "No they don't".   :D

It was a Motif XS8 (and the Organ voice was believable).

So as long as you're not playing for the musicians but the congregation, you can definitely get away with it...I'd rather not do it, but you can get away with it.

I'd rather not do it either, It really limits you you, but when a B3 isnt practical, i'd rather play motif organ, than piano.

Here is a video I made a while back, using the organ sounds on the ES8

Musicians are a finicky bunch. I remember when i wasn't playing and the other dude was using the guitar patch on our Motif. I kept thinking to myself "Dude, stop. It just sounds so corny." Turns out the congregation thought it was a real guitar playing.

Hey, you play good. You also played the organ sound on weighted keys? Doesn't that hurt your fingers. :D

Yeah I don't care about a real B3. As long as the keyboards sound similar or like a B3 is fine with people.

IDK......maybe its just me..but im kinda weird lol.  Where I come from you HAVE to learn how to be effective no matter what.  If you go to a small baptist church with an upright...you better bring ya 'A' game. Thats what i mean when i say keyboard organ is not as serious as some make it sound.  I cant really think of a time when i would need it.  EVER. Not at a concert (organ is 99% there), 2nd board (strings, synth, lead, acoustic guitar), or main board with no bass player.

Thanks.

Nope, they have a nice balance for both piano and synth/organ styles. I'd rather use that for organ than a non weighted motif

The Bigger churches usually have it like that. But we dont always play in church. Sometimes we have to play outdoors, or in a fellowship hall, or a prison etc, and an organ is out of the question.

I know what you mean about them old uprights, you gotta play it even if its out of tune by 2 or 3 whole steps :D

But you are correct, our job is to make do, with whatever we have

I see.
Wait? What? WTHeck? Really? Why?
Non-weighted keys make playing organ easier,
plus real organs have waterfall keybeds,
meaning they weight nothing at all.
