I see the thread has been hijacked :D
SO let me drop my unimportant opinion:

A board is a quick utility product, and based on it's capabilities along with the user's abilities, the board can imitate the original instrument 100%...

Of course sometimes (if not most of times, imho) the board seems to sound better than the original instrument (again, that depends on the conditions under which the board is used, by whom & which board it is).

I understand what everyone else above has said about whether it's appropriate to use keyboards or not...
I think it's just a question of orthodoxy, but as far as I'm  concerned, the keyboard is the best musical invention/ imitator..

anyday, given a choice of learning 1 instrument, I would choose a keyboard because of all the flexibility.

Oh boy.   :D

Bro, if you listen to a Saxophone, being played by a true sax player, I don't care WHO you put on WHAT board, it won't sound as good.

If you listen to a Violin, being played by a true violinist, I don't care WHO you put on WHAT board, it won't sound as good.

How can a digital sample of an instrument sound better than the actual instrument?

That's like saying the Nord Electro 2/Roland VK-8/Korg CX3/whatever sound BETTER than a good old B3.

How can it sound better than the real thing?  The thing it's emulating?   ?/?

A B3 emulates a pipe organ--which is does a very bad job doing, but by your definition a pipe organ should sound better.

;)

I'll submit that as time passes, what we find pleasurable changes; so, in fact, a keyboard might just sound better, in some cases. ;)

There's a difference between Digital Keyboard Samples that are intended to sound EXACTLY like their real life counterparts, and a B3 which was never intended to sound exactly like a Pipe Organ, but rather serve as a less expensive alternative (or the Rhodes which is an alternative to the Piano).

While the second part of that sentence is true, the first part is not.

True. Laurens Hammond wanted the Hammond to replace the pipe organs in churches as well as large Cathedrals. He never intended or liked for his organ to be used in Jazz, rock, and soul music, or for it to be used  with a leslie.

But honestly, without those mixture stops, it could never come close to replacing a pipe organ.

The drawbars were part of the original design of the B3.

I already said that the Hammond was intended to replace Pipe Organs.  It was intended as an alternative...meaning it was in direct competition with Pipe Organs.  I agree it was meant to replace them.

But he would be a fool to think that the accoustics of his Organ would sound EXACTLY like the accoustics of a Pipe Organ.

We could argue this all day though. :P

So as long as you're not playing for the musicians but the congregation, you can definitely get away with it...I'd rather not do it, but you can get away with it.
...Well...technically we're playing for neither. ;)

But you're sooooo right. Half of the time the congregation seems to think nothing of the stuff we worry about.

I dont think that a digital instrument can sound better but I do think that most human ears, even musicians, cannot tell the difference. If a test were conducted and people had to depend on their ear only to recognize a real b3 from the diversi, Nord, or xk series, I think many would not be able to tell the difference.

If you're an Organist who spends hours a week on a B3, you'd probably be able to tell.

...And yes, I completely agree that MOST people wouldn't be able to tell the difference.  Some boards have very realistic sounds.

Funny, I was sitting in a church that I often visit. and they started singing a song, and I thought to myself, that the piano patch shure does sound REAL!! Then I look over and saw the Pastor playing the Grand Piano..... Just thought I'd share that
