Lady Bassist
« on: November 16, 2004, 02:50:53 PM »
Hey everybody!!
I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if there are any lady bass players out there.  I know I'm not the only one.  Speak up!!!  I want to know how long you have been playing?  What bass?  4,5,6 String?  And did you feel that you were competing with our male counterpart.

Please don't take this the wrong way.  I find it hard to be a female bassist and be treated with the same respect as male bassist.  I just want to know who you felt about it. Thanks!!  God bless!!  8)

Welcome aboard.  I am a bass player.  I currently play 4-string, but had the wonderful opportunity to play a 5-string at a church this past Sunday.  Where I fellowship, I never felt I had to compete with the guitar/bass players.

I think that its real cool that we have at least two female bassist on LGM.com. I hope that you don't ever feel that you have to compete against us guys. If I guy treats you differently because you play the bass, tell him Big Dad-E Bass from learngospelmusic.com told him he need to check himself. I really look up to female bassist. Most of the time, I would rather see a female playing a bass. Cause Male Bass players get so cocky. So keep on playin' no matter what. And give people a good reason why the should talk about. Cause it's not everyday people walk into church to find any female playing an instrument. So you should be proud of yourselves. DO IT FOR ALL THE FEMALE BASSIST OUT THERE!!! DO IT FOR THE TEAM!!!! Holla!!!

Seermusician, welcome to the learngospelmusic.com.  Personally, I think that male musicians are insecure and coky like B D-E B said. Thats why they are always showing off and will won't show anyone anything.  Just stay in there.  :)

WOW!!!  Thanks for your responds (4hisglory, BigDaddyBass, ladybass).  Some of your comments are cute.  I think I'm gonna like this forum.  So far, it has helped me with some of my playing skills, and some of the comments made are quite funny.  GOD BLESS YOU!

But, I know that there has got 2 be more female bassist out there. So I patiently wait for your reponse.

I too am a lady bassist. It's been hard for me to find opportunities to play but I do feel that if you have the skills you will get the respect, whichis why I'm working so hard on mine.  It would be good if female bass players could form a support group.   We really do need to encourage each other!

I play bass guitar and I have had nothing but pleasant experiences and much encouragement from my male counterparts. I've been playing bass for about 10 months. I've had the opportunity to play for my church and to jam with other musicians. I play a 4 string Ibanez.

I PLAY A LITTLE BASS GUITAR ALSO. I HAVE 2 BASS GUITARS. IBANEZ AND PEAVEY BOTH 4 STRING. MOSTLY PLAY KEYBOARD AND ORGAN. BASS ON MY SPARE TIME.I

N SOUTH GEORGIA, THE GUYS HERE ARE AMAZED WHEN THEY MEET A FEMALE THAT'S TIGHT ON THE KEYS AND BASS GUITAR. I MOSTLY HAVE PROBLEM WITH THE FEMALE KEYBOARD PLAYERS. SOME OF THEM HAVE JEALOUS SPIRITS AND FEEL INTIMIDATED IF YOU SOUND BETTER ON THE KEYS THAN THEY DO. BUT OVERALL THE MALE MUSICIAN ARE LAID BACK.

I play bass at my church also. I get lots of support from the older males they think its cool to have a female bass player. I've been play solidly for about a year. I have a Fender squier, Yamaha, and a Samick all 4 string.
My technique is little weak but I'm improving everyday through practice and lots of prayer. I love playing my bass in praise and worship there's no other instrument like it.

Now we're talking!!  I know there are a lot more ladies out there that play and want to voice their feelings.  Sekesai I hear you.  This is the place to voice your feelings.  It is not easy being a female bass player.  For those of you who have the support of our brothers, I'm very happy for you.  Thanks guys for you support.  We need it.  When we play, it is unto the glory of God; not to the glory of ourselves.  God has blessed me with an awesome talent.  I can play any instrument that I can pick up.  I was made to be a musician for the glory of God.  Yes I'm a lady musician.  This is part of God's plan for my life. Sekesai this is how you should see yourself when you play the bass. It's a God given talent.  Use it without feeling intimidated.  Continue to ask God bless your fingers so that very note played would be anointed.  Over time those guys will notice something different about your playing and begin to respect you for it.  Never lose sight of the purpose.  God Bless (GB)

I think it's great!  Both the bassists at my chuch are male, but I know that a female bassist would feel completely welcome at my church.  I've heard some pretty nice female bassists.  Prince's bassist was a lady, and Victor Wooten used to travel with a lady bassist named Trinity.  God bless you and I hope you continue to inspire more women to pick up a bass!   :o

Hi everyone,

All my adult life I have been facinated with the bass guitar to the point where I went out and brought one for my birthday.  Since then I have taught myself the scales and handling the instument.  I now need some help to be competent to carry a song.  Any advice for this trying lass.....let me know.

Ladies please forgive me but I may be guilty of intimidating female bass players.  Being that I don't see too many I get excited cuz I want them to "kill it", you know. I want them to be good, cuz AINT NUTHIN LIKE A LADY THAT CAN REALLY PLAY!! and I have a bad habit of staring at female bassist, which might be imtimidating. So Please forgive me and fellas like me. It's all love really!

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and I am glad I found it. I have been playing for about 2 years now, and I'm still growing. It has been a challenge because I have found many musicians who do not want to share. I am glad there is a place where people who have the same heart can share, because it's all for God's glory, right?!   . There have been many times where I have played under everyone else because I felt a little intimidated by the other musicians. I am slowly growing from that. I try to focus on the reason why I am at the service and that is to give God the glory. then I pray.  I want to thank all of you for sharing because this is the first place I have come with so many musicians and have felt comfortable. Peace

:D Hello everyone,  I am blessed to be able to read and inhale your stories about being a female bass player.  I bought my bass one week ago and I cannot put it down.   All of my life I pick up some instrument but never learned it so they end up on the wall in my so called music room.  The bass is so different than all the rest.  My church doesn't know it yet but I will be playing for the Lord soon.........Signed Another Female Bass Player!!!

I'm glad I'm seeing more female bassists on this site. As a female bassist my self I have had some tough experiences. I play a four string bass I'm good but I'm not up there yet. But when I was 5 I fell in love with the bass and I every song I heard I would find the bass line and try to get it down in my head. When I got old enough some musicians in my church started giving lessons but they asked me "Why do you want to play the bass aren't you suppose to be on the piano?" so since than I have always tried to prove myself that I can be just as good as any guy and I ignored them because they were all guys and I was the only girl but when they heard me play it was another story. Up until today it's very hard but I have nothing but love for my male bassists and I strive to be better on the bass each and every day because in the end it's all for the glory of God so I try not to compete but remember that the music we play is all for the Glory of God.

MUCH LUV TO ALL THE FEMALE BASSISTS, that are trying to make it out there it's hard but in the end it's worth it.
