Thinking of upgrading Sonor set.
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:02:40 PM »
Looking at either sticking with Sonor and going to the Delites,or changing altogether and going with the Mapex Saturn line.My force series has been good to me,but i'm looking for a different sound other than basswood.

I just bought some Saturns not too long ago. I'm sooooo glad I did. They have a very unique voice and a wide tuning range. It depends on what you like bro.

I own a Sonor Delite kit and I couldn't be happier! They are so warm and sharp. Extremely well rounded drums. Very dynamic in their tuning abilities.

Well went to my local music store, and they had a Mapex Saturn Fusionease set there and boy oh boy am i sold.Sounds so much better than my Sonor Basswood kit.Got a price of 1924.00 for it.Only thing is it's in the color of Electric Berry Burst.I told the dude i want to order a Studioease kit instead and was told no problem.I'm getting the Studioease for 2200.00.I searched online and can't beat that.Any head recommendations?I like my Evans EC2's i use now,but the Mapex Saturn is a totally different wood compound.

They come standard with Remo Emperors. I'd say beat them until they cry. They sound great. Unless you have anoter preference, I'd just run with it.

Well another wrench in the plan.Went to purchase my drum mute kit so that i can practice more at home from the local drum shop(smaller, better prices and more knowledgeable staff)when another drummer that works there and we started talking about gear and all when i asked if he could order my Mapex Saturn set for me and how much would it run.He said they stopped selling Mapex since Mapex allowed the other music store right down the street to sell them also, but he thinks that i might be interested in a Taye kit.He had a Rock Pro kit in the store that looked and sounded decent, but i wanted more.So he introduced me to the TourPro and the StudioMaple.Man they both are HOT!!!!!!What should i do?I looked at the StudioMaple in 8,10,12,14,20 and 14 snare and the Tour Pro in 8,10,12,14,16,22 and 14 snare.

I personally feel that Sonor is heads and shoulders above Mapex.  I'd shoot for the Delites for the reasons mentioned that ER threw out.  The quality of the drums are bar-none.  Sonor is really getting it right.  Mapex just doesnt float my boat.

...hey man...Mapex is good enough for Will Calhoun.  ;)

...I'm a fan of cats finding their own voice with companies other than the popular ones.  Go Sonor!!!  The Delites are the truth!!! Ask my man E-R, Christopher Coleman, Benny Greb etc.   ;D

Taye makes some great sounding kits HOWEVER they have a serious problem with quality control. Lug casings breaking off bad edges cracked shells not caused by shipping. This is not something that happens all the time but all to often. UNfortunate because they make a great sounding product.
I personally really like their Go Kit which if you have noticed other manufacturers are starting to market similar versions at a much higher price (Ludwig just dropped one last year for $1100 for shell-pack and $1400 w/hardware).

Stick with the Mapex Saturn or go with the Sonor S-Class/S-Classix, Delights, or big boy SQ2.

...don't judge a kit by its stock heads. lol  Best believe Sonor's 3007 and 2007 kits sound very good and look good as well.  ;)

You gotta be kidding me right? Thats why it sounded nasty! lol.  ;D Dont judge Sonor's by the paper towels on the heads. Unless of course, it was 2 ply Bounty's the quicker picker upper.  ;D :D 8)

Bottom line, is go with a kit that is you. What you want. What you need. I love my Sonor Delites because they were what I needed. They offered me the control of sound that I was looking for. Plus the finish and attention to detail is second to none.

But, that doesn't mean they will work for you. Educate yourself on gear, and as my man j_kay says, pay attention to the fine little details, that is where the difference lies in the higher end kits. Somethings that really matter to you or bother you will be the deciding factor.
