What is the usual compensation for a 2 Hour service?
« on: February 18, 2009, 12:30:18 PM »
For a church that has no choir, no rehearsals, no teaching parts involved. And only has a praise team, and a 2 hour service on Sundays, what is fair compensation for a keyboard player? I have an idea in my head and Pastor had asked me and I wanted to make sure what I was telling him was near accurate, so I thought I would get everybody's opinion. Thanks!

Thanks man! I was starting to get worried there for a minute! But I don't know if he could stretch out that far since the church is extremely small, but I'll let him know that. Thanks!

Since the church is very small, and you are in NC, I'd say $50 -125 is fair.

We also have to consider the geographic location. cost of living is lower in the south, so I would expect less pay as opposed to Cali or NY

I mostly played for small churches, and I've gotten $30 from a very very very small one, $75 from a small AME church, and $100 from  2 150 member churches. All in NY

I say listen to the Lord. If a church is small take what they can pay and hope they have integrity and be honest on what they can give. I have a small church and the musician we HAD wanted $475 a week. We don't have a chior only a praise team. We had to let him go because we couldn't afford to keep him. So be a blessing to that small body of believers and God will bless you for it. Let God give you increase.

The Church shouldn't have even entertained that amount.

Yeah I know he's had people come to him asking for salaries that 500+ member churches would be giving and it just wasn't feasible for the size of the church. Thanks for the advise though, he doesn't want to leave anybody short, and wants to make sure the guy is getting market value.

My main focus would be to be a blessing to the ministry.  A small church can't afford no big ole payment...just my piggy back...

That's real talk..I play for my church and get little of nothin' but for me it's not about the money. The Lord has blessed us to have musicians with that kind of mind set, even the ones before me. If the keyboardist has a heart for the ministry..he'll work with you. If it's just a job, he might still work with you..this is still a ministry and it costs..gas, time, etc.

I make $150 a week to come to one saturday practice and play at sunday morning service from 10 to 12. The previous church I was at was paying me $250 for about the same thing although their service would often go closer to 3 hours.

Definitely, here in Chicago...it's nothing to pay $600+ for a musician, and that's for a Sunday service ONLY.

just because the church has all those members dont mean they can and/or willing to pay that amount my church has 800 plus members but i barely make 200 and i know this small church with 300 if that that pay the organist 230 and the drummer 100

WOW.... :o, I'm just getting used to the idea that people out there are getting paid for being church musicians. I attend two choir rehearsals a week alongside three services and play for free. God only knows how much I could use 10 - 30 a week let alone 500 a week.

You're not by yourself PianoWiz, I didn't know about paying until 2005 as a drummer. I would tell my friends about my church's hectic rehearsal schedule, and out of town appointments, afternoon services and the first thing they would ask me is "That's alot, how much are they giving you?" It wasn't until then that I realized how much I was doing for free. I loved doing it so it didn't bother me though. It's all about the heart, If you are lead to give your time and ministry to a church then you should do it. But I don't think you can do it for ALL churches ALL the time because churches will use you if you let them.
