play or not play?!?! That is the question!
« on: December 04, 2004, 10:34:32 AM »
Okay guys. This situation came up not too long ago, and I wanted to know how you guys would handle it.

Alright. A church needed me to play during a revival week they were having. I agreed to play each night of the revival. Well, the last night, they has a young preacher there who begins to woop and spit lies! Everything she was saying to me was NOT biblically right, but I felt as if I should still back her up because I didnt want to show an attitude during service. I knew if I didn't play, the whole congregation would look at me wondering why I wasn't backing him up! So, to keep order, I played to lessen the idea of confusion happening.

Similar situation where an older male preacher was giving his trial sermon. He was saying some things that were TRULY off the wall. A sinner would know he wasn't right!!! Well, everyone there (which was family to him) was "Amening" and "You Better Preaching!!" , so I knew I had to start backing him up, but I FO' SHO NUF ain't want to.

So, what would you have done???

I would have acted like I had to go to the bathroom....LOL

But seriously It's a tough call, you are under the serice of your pastor or church leader... they should be the judgement call if you are unsure, after all they are responsible on what is alowed to be preached in the pulpit

The only problem with that is that the Pastor was not my pastor, and also has a different faith than I. I think that he probably would have agreed with what the preacher was saying. So, I really could not have asked him.

The best thing to do here is talk to your pastor and tell him exactly how you feel. Don't hold back . . . tell them that you don't feel right ministering in music with someone who not preaching the truth of GOD's Word, or whom you know isn't living right. Tell them it makes your spirit feel strange and you aren't really free to flow.

Now let me tell you something I have learned as a teaching evangelist. The Bible says a lot of things that we don't really ponder for revelation like we should. One of the things it says is this . . . "Know those that labor among you."

Now I have found this out the hard way. It is very unwise to minister on a consistent basis with someone that you do not know very well. This goes for music ministry too. You see, you will be associated with those people whether you want to be or not.  Even though I don't play very often at all, I wouldn't want to be known as the ministral for a minister who was not right, both in lifestyle and in doctrine. Now, a one night service in a place you don't know well, or a revival with someone you don't know well, that is different. But when you are going to play with someone or minister with someone on a regular basis, I have found out that you had better know that person.  And I mean KNOW THEM WELL.

I think you did the right thing by playing at that time. But I would go to the pastor and say what concerns you. They will love you and understand, and give insight that you need.

Be Blessed . . .

BBoy, you must have been typing that when I replied to kadman. This was not at my church, nor was I affilaited with that church. They heard me playing with a group, and took my card. Then they called me up asking for me to play for them during a revival. The whole service was cool until they had their visiting preacher start to preach.

Oh, so you were playing as a guest musician at a church? Oh, I see.

And your pastor or other spiritual leadership knew that you were going to play there? Did they know and agree that you should go?

I think you were right to play that night, and depending on whether or not you committed yourself, you might should have played the entire revival just because you gave your word. But it looks like a great experience that we can all learn from. Maybe we should check and see that we know what the place / people are about first.

One of my favorite teachers agreed to go to a church for a meeting. Later, after she went, she found out that the church would not allow her to give an altar call for the Baptism of the Holy Ghost. She said that if she had known that, she wouldn't have agreed to go. However, because she gave her word, she went and ministered. God greatly used her and many people were saved and others were touched by the power of the Gospel.

So sometimes  it is good to keep our word. God honors us when we do what we say we will do, and that is good Christian behavior. But I think she probably learned to check and see what the people were about before she accepted invitations.

Be Blessed . . .

Kadman and BBoy gave very good advice. However, one thing I learned that will stick me is the deeper you study the bible, you'll realize you really don't know much as you think. (This isn't criticism.)

For example, I posted a few bible quiz questions, some questions
got difference responses even though I was looking for one specific response. Does that make the responses wrong? They all were on target.

Even in some of our post we disagree - we're from different denominations, ethnic groups, genders, etc. So, its to be expected.

However, if  a speaker totally deviated or butcher the scripture then, there is a serious problem. You would have to look at his/her teachings.

I knew personally I had a criticizing spirit of other ministers because I came from a family of preachers. Until I had my first sermon, I'm sure there are some others out - and your nerves can get the best of you.

Best thing to do is pray about it. Ask God to show you - you first and talk with your Pastor about it.
