HOW CAN I DICTATE KEYS?
« on: December 04, 2004, 05:42:52 AM »
My name is Ezekiel. I compose songs, great songs indeed. People usually marvel at songs I compose. They often want me to teach or to perform on stage. Sure, I can sing on key that is already on, but there's a problem.

I don't know what key I use each time I compose. Is it because I am not a chorister? I need to be enlightened on how to get at keys.

Somebody help! You can write to: ezekielsvision1@yahoo.co.uk

God bless.

If you are into computer programs there is a program called logic that will take what ever you play and score it as readable music. There are some others I believe like Notator.

what key am i in?

ezekiel may be experiencing something that many beginners in singing or singing-songwriting face.

how do i know what pitches i am singing?

you need a fixed pitch instrument. it could be as cheap as a harmonica or a pitch pipe. but you need to listen and remember the pitch or pitches you sing and match your voice to the fixed pitch sound made by the instrument. now you can name the sounds you are making.  that is a start.

however just knowing the names of the pitches, does not mean you know what key you are in. the combinations of pitches in melody produce a tonality. hopefully. from the gravity of the pitches you can find a key or tonality. unless your music is abstract. or is  a transition which is roving and functionless.

the obvious answer to most questions here on this board is formal and proper training in the area of concern there is really no shortcuts to achieving the goal you have. you must start by becoming fimilar with music, music notation, music theory, ear training. you can gain so much from the smallest amount of knowledgd in the basics by a book read all you can then seek out an instructor and then continue to ask for help as you are doing now You sound as though you love what you do and want more. remember to reach for the high calling which is in christ Jesus He says high because it takes some effort on out part.

If on your path you go astray and somtimes seems you've lost your way
to the begining you should go for all the things you need to know.
Regain your sight and direction there and continue your journey with no dispare. You'll find that you'll arive in time with up held hands and peace of mind.
