More Tuning Issues
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:28:13 PM »
Im kinda having the same problem as QCdrummer but the thing with me is. My snare just sounds dull all of the time now. It used to give me a Ring an also have depth at the same time. Now it doesn't even cut through like it should, it sounds really FLAT. Should I change the snare wires and the throw off because the throw-off is really messed up. I have to rig it so it wont sound like a tom.

Any suggestion....

If your throw-off is messed up, definitely put a new one on. If your snare wires have lost their ability to hold shape when they arer't in "active" mode, then you need to change them. Good snare wires will make a HUGE difference. You should already know when your heads need replacing. Start there. SNARE MAKE-OVER!! 8)

...specifics: What snare?  What wood/metal?  What heads are you using?

Todd Sucherman talked about tuning the bottom head tighter than the top in his Methods and Mechanics dvd. I tried it and it made a huge difference.

Wood: Oak

Demensions: 6.5/13

Heads: G1-Batter Hazy 300- Snare Size

Im thinking about putting Die-Cast Hoops on it too.  ::)

And Tko, I have tried doing that and it worked fine until recently, so thats how I know it isn't the tuning method im using.

Did she take a fall or tumble over recently?  Check out the shell and make sure the edges are cool and she's still true, the hoops too...although, I imagine it would be hard to reshape an oak shell.  Barring that, it's probably just the throw-off issue.

...I can tell you that the strainer/hardware that comes with that Musashi  ;) are a bit on the.....well...."budget" side. lol

...other than that, why don't you try a head change.  You may have an old head already.  When was the last time you changed the head?

The Batter side is around 5 months old. The snare side is around 2 months Old. And your right about the hardware, its kinda bad. I noticed that when I bought the snare. What throw-off, and snare wires would you suggest?

NO, Not that I know of. The Shell is in good condition still. Now the hoops on the other hand, I have not check recently. :-\

Trick's GS007 strainer (aluminum finish) and Puresound's 13" Custom Series Snare (16 Strand).  Just my suggestion.

I found a few sources, and discovered that the strainer is $69.95.  I'm sure if you can get some "Js" and some "Jewels", surely you can get something that integral to the proper operation of your snare, which in turn will give you the sound that you're desiring.  Heaven forbid if it's your only snare...   :D

Get it done!!!
